I was wondeing if you are allowed to walk freely around the camp these days?
That is, if I went on a tour, could I freely walk around taking pictures in such a way as to establish the exact height of important buildings?

The theater in Dachau is still in operation. The "documentary" they show in it hardly deals with any facts; instead, it relies on imagery and appealing to the viewers' emotions. At the end of the film, they show the gate into Dachau swinging open, and precisely at that moment, the users in the theater open the door leading into the camp, for a particularaly "eerie" effect...

Yes, but the entrance is in the old administration building where they suggest that you hire a guide that tells you lies. But you can walk thru this house and go directly into the Stamlager (Auschwitz I).
Here you can move around as long you don't break into any doors.
My experiences are two years old.
