In fact, the story of ‘Operation 1005’ is based upon several completely unreliable witness statements. The first of them were collected by Soviet commissions or journalists and printed in the Black Book edited by Ilya Ehrenburg
and Wassili Grossman. This is a propagandistic collection of tales from alleged eyewitnesses. Aside from the Vladimir K. Davidov already mentioned,
one finds here the (hearsay) testimony of Shimon Ariel and Zalma Edelman on Białystok,660 that of a few (according to their own statements) escapees
from Kaunas,661 and that of a Y. Farber on Ponari (Lithuania).662 These witnesses know nothing to report about any ‘Operation 1005’ or a ‘Sonderkommando 1005.’
The designation ‘Sonderkommando 1005’ was invented by the Soviets. At
the proceedings of February 9, 1946, at the Nuremberg Trial, Chief Counsel
Smirnov read out excerpts from the protocol “of the interrogation of Gerhard
Adametz (Exhibit USSR-80, Document Number USSR-80), taken by an American army lieutenant, Patrick McMahon,” in which there was talk of the activities of the “Sonderkommando 1005-A” and “1005-B.”663

(Sereny, p. 97):
“‘I was going with Standartenführer (Colonel) Blobel,’ he said. ‘I hardly knew
him but he was invited to dinner too, so we went together. It was evening and just
getting dark. At one moment – we were driving along a long ravine. I noticed
strange movements of the earth: clumps of earth rose into the air as if by their
own propulsion – and there was smoke: it was like a low-toned volcano; as if
there was burning lava just beneath the earth. Blobel laughed, made a gesture
with his arm, pointing back along the road and ahead of us, all along the ravine –
the ravine of Babi Yar – an said: ‘here lie my 30,000 Jews.’”
we have the witness from the NS Germany too
