(CNN) — Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and author who fought for peace, human rights and simple human decency, has died at the age of 87, a spokesman for Israel's Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, said Saturday.

Wiesel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, recounted his family being sent to the Nazi concentration camps in his first book, "Night," which was published in 1955.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded Wiesel as a "master of words."

"(He) gave expression through his exceptional personality, and fascinating books about the victory of the human spirit over cruelty and evil. In the darkness of the Holocaust in which our brothers and sisters -- six million -- were murdered, Elie Wiesel was a ray of light and greatness of humanity who believed in the good in man," Netanyahu said.

"I was privileged to know Elie and to learn so much from him."

Born in Romania, Wiesel was 15 when he was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland with his family in 1944.

The future writer was later moved and ultimately freed from the Buchenwald camp in 1945. Of his relatives, only two of his sisters survived.

Wiesel told CNN last year that Auschwitz was "to this day, a source of shock and astonishment."

He broke his silence on his Holocaust experience 10 years after the liberation with the acclaimed memoir "Night," originally published in French as "La Nuit," which has been translated into 30 languages and has sold millions of copies since its publication.

The Nobel peace laureate, who wrote extensively about the horrors he and others endured, said he knew he'd have to write at some point but feared the words would elude him.

"I'm not sure, by the way, that I did find them," he said. "Maybe there are no words for what happened. Maybe somehow, the Germans ... the cruel killers, have succeeded at least in one way, at least that it deprived us, the victims, of finding the proper language of saying what they had done to us, because there are no words for it."

In 1986 the Nobel committee called Wiesel an important spiritual leader.

In his speech honoring Wiesel, then-chairman Egil Aarvik said: "From the abyss of the death camps he has come as a messenger to mankind, not with a message of hate and revenge, but with one of brotherhood and atonement."

Millions of people were touched by "Night" and some 50 other works Wiesel produced. His books were deeply personal. He was honest with his readers about what he went through physically, emotionally, spiritually.

Nevertheless, I see some glaring falsehoods in that Obituary.

It should be sanctioned that Elie Wiesel at least proposed the rape of innocent goy girls or women:

BUT the Yiddish [of Un di velt, your early version of Night] continues: "Early the next day, Jewish boys ran off to Weimar to steal clothing and potatoes. And to rape German girls [un tsu fargvaldikn daytshe shikses]. The historical commandment of revenge was not fulfilled."

In French this passage reads: "Le lendemain, quelques jeunes gens coururent à Weimar ramasser des pommes de terre et des habits - et coucher avec des filles. Mais de vengeance, pas trace."

WieselOr, in Stella Rodway's English rendition: "On the following morning, some of the young men went to Weimar to get some potatoes and clothes - and to sleep with girls. But of revenge, not a sign."

To describe the differences between these versions as a stylistic reworking is to miss the extent of what is suppressed in the French. Un di velt depicts a post-Holocaust landscape in which Jewish boys "run off" to steal provisions and rape German girls; Night extracts from this scene of lawless retribution a far more innocent picture of the aftermath of the war, with young men going off to the nearest city to look for clothes and sex.

In the Yiddish, the survivors are explicitly described as Jews and their victims (or intended victims) as German; in the French, they are just young men and women. The narrator of both versions decries the Jewish failure to take revenge against the Germans, but this failure means something different when it is emblematized, as it is in Yiddish, with the rape of German women.

The implication, in the Yiddish, is that rape is a frivolous dereliction of the obligation to fulfill the "historical commandment of revenge"; presumably fulfillment of this obligation would involve a concerted and public act of retribution with a clearly defined target. Un di velt does not spell out what form this retribution might take, only that it is sanctioned - even commanded - by Jewish history and tradition.

I am informed by a listener that Claude Lanzmann (creator of the film Shoah) declined to pay homage to the memory of Elie Wiesel on French radio station France Inter this morning. According to a listener, Lanzmann, interviewed by Laetitia Gayet:

gave no elegy for Wiesel, on the contrary, even citing the hungarian Nobel prize winner Imre Kertesz, "a true survivor", according to whom Wiesel had only spent 3 or 4 nights at Auschwitz before waiting out the end of the war at Buchenwald.

Gayet was reportedly shocked. Unfortunately, I cannot verify this, as the radio interview has apparently been suppressed from the France Inter schedule. Perhaps the (alleged) statement of Kertesz is on public record elsewhere though. Kertesz wrote about Auschwitz, including details of his time in the hospital there. According to one revisionist account of his work he heard of gas chambers but did not see any. The revisionist who pointed this out was sentenced to prison (on probation) by a court in Budapest earlier this year:

After the war, Kertesz fell out with the communist authorities in Hungary which delayed publication of his work. According to one account, his novel Fateless (Sorstalanság) "differs from most accounts of Nazi concentration camps in its relentless objectivity". Apparently, Kertesz also translated writers, including Friedrich Nietzsche and Ludwig Wittgenstein, into hungarian. He won the Nobel prize in 2002 and died earlier in 2016:

Elie Wiesel was arguably the most well known and powerful figure among acknowledged Holocaust survivors. While alive, he exercised his “moral lobby” to keep the memories of the Holocaust and Holocaust survivors alive and to “educate” the new generations on the dangers of anti-Semitism and hatred to minorities, specially, of course, to Jews. He coined a phrase that he would repeat often: Never forget.

Much has been criticized about Wiesel, he was not only a Holocaust survivor but a powerful man invited often to events with presidents and other high politicians and businessmen.

In 2009, the New York Times reported that “Mr. Wiesel’s charity lost $15.2 million, and he and his wife, Marion, lost their life savings. “This was a personal tragedy where we discovered all of a sudden what we had done in 40 years — my books, my lectures, everything — was gone,” said Mr. Wiesel” This was known as a Ponzi scheme. After this episode with Mr. Madoff , who was the schemer, our good friend the deceased said Mr. Madoff was a “ ‘Sociopath,’ ‘psychopath,’ it means there is a sickness, a pathology. But Elie Wiesel’s life was a successful one in spite of the loss of $15.2 million. In 1986, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize based on his role in speaking out against violence, repression and racism. He also “collected scores of awards and honors, including an honorary knighthood in Britain. Obama presented him the National Humanities Medal in 2009.”

In common with so many other “Holocaust survivors” his personal story was full of holes and incoherencies.Many doubts about the legitimacy of his narrative were raised among the revisionist community expressed publicly.

He claimed to have been an inmate at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, but never displayed his tattoo, a common feature of inmates at Auschwitz- Birkenau, to those who demanded proof of veracity. So one can say without exaggeration that his personal story cannot be trusted as factual.

One thing is now for sure, the orthodox Holocaust narrative and its industry have lost its most influential promoter. Maybe some else will rise to that “noble cause” of raising awareness in humanity about the atrocities Jews suffered during WWII and the need of special treatment for them these seventy years on. For now may Elie Wiesel rest in peace. Or not.

The tattoo issue is a sideshow for me.
The real issue, besides Wiesel being yet another Jew who couldn't work and was not 'gassed' as the storyline claims he would have been, is his admission that Jews were given a choice to stay at Auschwitz and await the Soviets or leave with the retreating Germans. Most chose to leave with the Germans.
