The following paragraphs taken from the USHMM web site describe the open air "cremation" of Jewish gassing victims in the Aktion Reinhardt camps. The first, Treblinka, is described in more detail by Yankiel Wiernik in "A Year in Treblinka". What he describes is "a surprising ... event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency" - a miracle.
Treblinka
Deportations to Treblinka continued until May 1943. A few isolated transports arrived after that date. Beginning in the fall of 1942, the camp authorities, under orders from Lublin, began to exhume bodies from the mass graves and burn them in order to obliterate the evidence of mass killing. Jewish prisoners were forced to do this grisly work. The burning of corpses continued until the end of July 1943.
Belzec
In October 1942, on orders from Lublin, German SS and police personnel, using groups of Jewish forced laborers rounded up from various locations in Lublin District, began to exhume the mass graves at Belzec and burn the bodies on open-air “ovens” made from rail track. The Germans also utilized a machine to crush bone fragments into powder.
Sobibor
In the autumn of 1942, on orders from Lublin, German SS and police personnel, using Jewish forced laborers selected from arriving transports, began to exhume the mass graves at Sobibor and to burn the bodies on open-air “ovens” made from rail track. The Germans also utilized a machine to crush bone fragments into powder. These efforts aimed at obliterating all traces of mass murder.
Athough the descriptions are brief, the cremation operations for Sobibor and Belzec are clearly referring to almost identical events.
Does anyone know if there is an eyewitness to these miracles at Sobibor and Belzec?
