Sweetie Pie why do you say that it is claimed he spoke Sebian? Is Yugoslavian not a recognised language? Perhaps you can show the photos in a line and clearly point out the differences that you see.

Also I know a thing or two about French administrative systems and would doubt very much that one country's embassy would grant papers to someone not of that country. That his name isn't visible proves that he isn't the Elie Wiesel we think he is. Is that what you are saying?

Yugoslavian not a recognised language?

The one-word answer to your question is "No". The more complicated answer is the official language was Serbo-Croat which Serbs wrote in Cyrillic and called Serbian and Croats wrote in Roman script and called Croatian. No doubt there were widely varying spoken dialects across the country, as well as other languages, closely related like Slovenian or unrelated like Albanian.

Today Serbian and Croatian are classed as different languages. As they say, a language is a dialect with its own army.
