Holocaust survivor tells of concentration camps
Tells H.S. students to never give up, think positive, stop hating

NORTH BRUNSWICK - Frida Herskovitswas born in Czechoslovakia 81 years ago, living with her mother, father and nine siblings.

"We had a wonderful life and it was nice there," she said.
Then at the age of 17, her life changed forever. In 1944, the Germans came into her town with rifles and German shepherds, ordering the residents to take their personal belongings and leave within two hours. Herskovits' mom thought they were being brought to a labor camp, and wouldn't let a Christian neighbor hide her children. What they didn't know is that this was the beginning of the Holocaust.
"You should see what hate does. Hate kills and tortures and destroys people. That's why I go to tell my story," said Herskovits, who addressed social studies students at the North Brunswick Township High School on Jan. 17.
Herskovits said she was brought to a brick factory where she had to sleep on the floor on top of the bricks. She was there for a few weeks, but the torture and killing started immediately. She said if someone disobeyed orders, they were shot on the spot. Many people died on the train ride to the site because of no food,water or air, and her mom and sister couldn't stop crying.

"But we couldn't do nothing," she said.
She said their hair was shaven and clothes were removed, and they were given one dress and a tattoo identification before being sent to the barracks, where five or six people would sleep in a bunk bed. With the laborers lined up on the right and the women and children on the left, she said she saw a baby shot to death, German shepherds "tear a baby out of the mother's wound" and people burned alive. There were even experimental surgeries in which organs were removed and human skin was used to make lampshades and picture frames.

Herskovits said she would have to work with rocks or pick cabbage in a field. The workers were fed a little soup and a piece of bread that "wasn't fit for any animal, but we were hungry." Anyone who was sick had gasoline poured over them in a pit and was burned.

"The screams were unbelievable," she said. "You were just told what to do and obey. Anybody who disobeyed was dead."
She was then sent on an open cargo train in freezing, rainy weather to another camp in Germany, which was filled with soot. She said that once every two days she'd get black coffee and a slice of bread, but no shower. She said people were constantly dying but were left there because there was no crematorium.

It was while he was working that Leslie saw some of the most unspeakable things.

He said: “I saw a truck turn up which was full of 600 little tiny children, babies.

“They were crying and I knew they were going straight to the gas chambers and their death.

“One of the children fell out – and I was about 25 or 30 metres from there. The guard stopped the car, picked up the child, tore off its two legs, it was bloody.

This is far from the only story which sticks out in his mind.

Leslie said: “One day there was a man from Holland next to me, we were working together. He stood up to straighten his back, that’s all he did, and the guard shot him.

“The guard was Hungarian so I said ‘why did you shoot him?’

“He said ‘he’s here to work, not to straighten his back’. I thought ‘I can’t say any more, I’m just going to keep quiet unless he shoots me’.

“Three weeks later I was very sick, I thought I was dying already, so I went to the toilet for 20 minutes.

“When I got back the same guy shouted out to me ‘you were there 20 minutes in the toilet. You’re not supposed to be there that long, come over here’.

“He told me to drop my pants and gave me 30 lashes. Instead of being annoyed with him, I thanked God he only gave me lashes. He could have killed me.

“I wasn’t annoyed with him, even after all the terrible things he had done. You just have to let it go.”

The medical experiments that Simon Rozenkier says he saw and experienced in Nazi concentration camps strain the imagination.

He saw a hunchback whose hump had been cut off by Josef Mengele, the infamous Nazi doctor. He said Dr. Mengele had thrown a Jewish man into a bath of ice and let him freeze to death, in a study intended to help Nazi pilots survive when they were shot down over icy seas.

Mr. Rozenkier, a native of Poland who emigrated to New York in 1947, said he saw Nazi doctors administer intense X-rays to the genitalia of Jews and Gypsies to sterilize them. And he vividly recalled how a Nazi doctor, Horst Schumann, had repeatedly injected him with chemicals -- he was told they were vitamin supplements -- to sterilize him, all part of a Nazi effort to perfect ways to keep Jews from reproducing.

Mr. Rozenkier was born in Wroclawek, Poland, 75 years ago. In September 1939, soon after Hitler invaded Poland, German soldiers pounded on his family's apartment door to arrest Mr. Rozenkier's father. When his oldest sister, Helena, stepped outside to protest, a soldier shot her to death.

Wroclawek's Jews were sent to a ghetto on the outskirts of town. Mr. Rozenkier escaped, and for several months slept in a cemetery next to an aunt's grave.

He was arrested when he was 14 and sent to a work camp. There, he loaded sand, nearly died of typhus and was eventually assigned the job of carting away hundreds of Jews who had died of typhus.

One day while transporting the dead he visited a Polish family to beg for potatoes. German soldiers seized him and planned to hang him, but he was spared because the commander of a nearby women's work camp put in a good word for him. Breaking into tears, he said: ''My sister, Leah, worked for that commander. She was his cook. But she sold her body to him to save my life.''

After more than a year in work camps, he was shipped to Auschwitz in a crammed cattle car. He was tattooed with the number 143511 and assigned to a nearby work camp that made synthetic rubber. One day, an associate of Dr. Mengele saw him and had him sent to the nearby Birkenau camp for experiments.

With reddish-blond hair that made him look less Jewish, Mr. Rozenkier said, he was spared from the gas chamber because the Nazi doctors thought he had unusual genes. He said, ''They were trying to figure out why this Jew got red hair.''

At Birkenau, while many were starving around him, Mr. Rozenkier was fed an ample diet of buckwheat to help him survive the experiments.

''Sometimes they even gave us chocolate -- can you believe it? Chocolate,'' he said.

''Mengele didn't give a damn if I live or die,'' he continued. ''Sometimes he gave people a piece of chocolate, and the next minute he shoots them in the head.''

After Mr. Rozenkier survived the sterilization shots, a doctor who took a liking to him arranged for him to work in a coal mine. From there, he joined the infamous death march to Buchenwald in which the Nazis shot hundreds of stragglers. He was in Buchenwald when American troops liberated it.

As Mrs. Blum fixed lunch for her husband on Monday, she said she still had nightmares about the horrors, which included being strip-searched with a group of women while German soldiers watched and laughed. And she was in a medical ward after being pushed down some stairs by a Nazi. She shared the ward with a young Jewish woman who tried to hide her pregnancy from the Nazis. Jewish nurses drowned the newborn in a bucket, fearing that the baby’s cries would doom them all.

"There were three or four prisoners laying against a wall," Combs says. "One fella got up and brushed himself off a little, and said, in English, "I'd like to show you something.' "

The prisoner, a Jewish teacher, led Combs and a couple of his comrades to the side of the wall. There was a square hole with a lid on it. He lifted the lid, and showed them a slide that led down into the basement of the building. The prisoner told Combs that if the guards didn't like someone, or wanted someone eliminated, that they throw them headfirst into this hole. He put the lid back down. "Now I want to show you what they really did," the prisoner said.

He led them into the basement of the building. "The end of the slide came down, and there was something that looked like a toilet seat on it. He pointed to it and said, 'This is where their heads came out, and they stayed there. They took that,'—and he pointed over to a metal, huge hammer—'and this is how they killed them. They hit them in the head. They hit them in the head until they were dead.' "

The prisoner explained that the SS would then bludgeon the teeth out of the dead victims for any gold to be found, and would strip the body of its clothes. "He pointed to huge, shiny eight inch hooks in the wall," Combs says, "and the SS took them out and hung them up on these hooks, and cut their feet so that they'd bleed out." From there, the bodies would be sent to the crematorium to be burned.

Milton Belfer Testimony @1:27:30:

Milton Belfer spent only a few days at Auschwitz before he and his brother were transferred to a labor camp near Chemnitz. At one point, he refers to the Kapos at Auschwitz as “a bunch of Polish Jews.” Just hours before Belfer's gassing was to occur upon his arrival at Auschwitz, he and his fellow passengers were given bags of sugar by the Germans and ghetto leaders to take with them into the camp…

Belfer: I got a bag of sugar. Everybody got a bag of sugar when we went to Auschwitz. Going into the train. So I took in the sugar --

Interviewer: Who gave you the bag of sugar?

Belfer: The leaders, the Germans, the ghetto leaders. A small bag of sugar….But you went in [to Auschwitz], you have to take off all the clothes and go like this [with your hands] in the washroom. We was also lucky, what happened. We were staying before the crematorium when we arrived early in morning until afternoon, but it was a rumor that we was supposed to go in crematorium. But they didn’t have gas. The train was bumped. And they didn’t have gas. So it was already dark, a little darkish. They took us out to take a shower, and you go out the other side. You went naked to take a shower in the same place where the gas comes out.

Interviewer: Did you say there was no gas?

Belfer: Yeah. They didn’t have gas, because the train was bumped. There was a rumor there, because there we met people — Jewish people — from the ghetto that were sent to Auschwitz. They were the Kapos, if you know what the Kapos is…

Interviewer: Were they Jewish also?

Belfer: Yeah…Some friends of my brother find somebody who was in the ghetto, and [now] he was in the concentration camp as Kapo. [Somebody] from lodge. So he said one to another, he said he came out to ask, about this [?]. And also, if I’m not mistaken, this soldier was watching us. This police soldier said, “They are waiting that the train should come.” And they didn’t have gas. So we took a shower and went out the other side and went into Auschwitz to the labor camp…

No. I didn’t get a number. We went into the camp, and then a few days later I register. And my brother registered himself. And I registered myself. And they said immediately to us, “You are supposed to go to Floessenburg, another concentration camp.” But on the way they cut off — and many people, about 400 people, was on the train — and we went to, near Chemnitz, to a place called…

Interviewer: And you left Auschwitz then?

Belfer: Yes. We was a few days in Auschwitz. Maybe three or four days.

Of course, any time you get a shower as you enter a concentration camp, it means the nazis "ran out of gas" :lol:

Ohio Woman Details Frightening Escape From Nazi Capture, 75 Years Later

Holocaust survivor Stevie Marks, 89, says it was one horrifying day in Warsaw, Poland that began her family's 7,000-mile escape from Nazi Europe.

"When we woke up in the morning we heard some German tanks in the village saying 'Everybody out! Jews on one side, everybody else on the other,'" Marks of Cincinnati, Ohio tells ABC News. " After a few minutes one of the officers pointed to 10 Orthodox men. They took these men and tied their beards to the back of a truck and dragged them through the streets," she said, crying.

"They died of course, and the rest of the Jews standing there had to bury them. I was only 14 years old."

Holocaust survivor recalls 'Lucky Lie' that saved his life

They got two slices a day. If a boy took the bread of another, a shovel handle was held to his throat, he said, because stealing bread was like a death sentence to the theft victim.

He worked in the crematorium and gas chambers and watched them "throw the live ones in the oven." He loaded cement blocks on trucks, and he prayed. He listened to boys tell of their castrations and watched people "die like flies."

At one point, with no food or medicine or water, he was waiting to die in a wooden bunk without straw, beside another sick boy. One day, a Nazi SS soldier appeared at the bunk, lifted up the boy and threw him out the window.

"I thought he was sleeping," Wolnerman said. "But I had been lying next to a boy that was dead for two weeks."

Somehow — by God's grace, he thinks — he survived.

During his five years in postwar Germany, he met his wife, Jennie, at the displaced persons camp. She had survived the concentration camp because a female Nazi guard "took a liking to her" and brought her a bowl of soup every day, which she shared a spoon at a time with her fellow prisoners, he said. The guard even offered her a chance to leave, but she wouldn't abandon her friends.

He said: “Mengele said he wanted me to photograph some of those he was experimenting on.

"They’d bring the women into the room and strip them naked, then inject them with a kind of anaesthetic – unless they were Jewish, in which case experiments would be performed without anaesthesia.”

Wilhelm also had to photograph children about to be subjected to appalling acts of sadism, including procedures such as organ removal, amputations and castration, all done without anaesthetic.

Life Inside the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp for Women

Nestled alongside an idyllic lake, the Ravensbrück concentration camp, 50 miles north of Berlin, was constructed in 1939 specifically to house women. By the end of the war, 130,000 women from 20 European countries had been led through its entrance, often unaware of the danger inside.

Most of the camp’s inhabitants weren’t Jewish; rather, they were considered inferior because they were prostitutes, lesbians, political resisters, “work-shy,” or “asocial.” Roma (Gypsies) and Jehovah’s Witnesses—the latter had only to renounce their faith to be freed—were also imprisoned there. All were considered “useless mouths” by the Nazis, worthy of brutal treatment. More than 30,000—some estimate as many as 90,000—women perished there from starvation, disease, gassings, hanging, torture, or execution by shooting.

Other heroines emerge in Helm’s narrative, including the brave Polish “rabbits”—women who were mutilated in medical experiments at the camp’s “hospital.” In some operations, deep wounds were made to the women’s legs, which were then deliberately infected with bacteria. Drugs were then tested for their efficacy in healing the swollen, pus-filled limbs.

One rabbit, Krysia Czyz, used urine as invisible ink in the margins of the censored letters she sent to inform her family, and the Polish underground, of the unspeakable suffering in the camp. Miraculously, a clandestine radio station operating from Britain broadcast Czyz’s reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva also received the information—as it did other news about the camps—but the organization refused to intervene.

On December 16, 1942, in his column in the Daily Herald, Hannen Swaffer quoted verbatim from the manuscript of an address made by Joseph Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. (Daily Herald, December 16, 1942, p.3)

For, as Dr Hertz himself said, some of the stories sound "unbelievable." Yet so is all Nazidom!

Babies As Footballs !

HERE, copied from the Chief Rabbi's manuscript, is a verbatim extract:—

"On July 27 all the Jewish inhabitants of a town near Kiev were ordered to the stadium. The women, of whom there were about 500, were instructed to hold their little children in their arms.

A few minutes after we had all assembled, an eyewitness declares, a group of German soldiers in football attire entered the stadium. They snatched the infants from their mothers' arms and used them as footballs, bouncing and kicking them around the arena.

Soon the ground was drenched with blood and the stadium was filled with anguished cries of women driven insane as they saw their children being murdered before their eyes."

Neroism Reborn

NEVER since the days of the martyrdom of Christians in the Colosseum by Nero has such a story been told.

Yet Dr. Hertz never allows himself to be led into over-statement, even in the flash of oratory. He is most most reserved in his utterance.

He spoke too as the religious head of a great community and in the presence of its leaders—M.P.s. University professors, doctors of distinction and the Lord Mayor of London.

He would not jeopardise, I know, a case presented to the world by one exaggeration.

Voice of Authority

WHAT is the Chief Rabbi's authority? He has quoted a story told to the Soviet newspapers by Abraham Fivusovitch, a 26-year-old Russian soldier now fighting on the Stalingrad front. He gives the name of the village—Pogrehistchi.

It is now circulated by the World Jewish Congress, which is urging the United Nations to action in the vain hope of minimising the Horror [sic], and of the British section of which the Marchioness of Reading is president, and Professor Brodetsky, Jewry's first Senior Wrangler, and Philip Guedalla vice-presidents.

91-year-old Nazi Holocaust survivor from KC moves murderers to tears

Instead of taking them to Treblinka to the north for certain death, her train was rerouted to Majdenek to the south. For six months, they worked and barely survived starvation. They withered to the bone. They witnessed prisoners hanged, others ripped to death by German shepherds.

At Bergen-Belsen, her final camp, Warshawski lived among the dead, mounds of victims of typhus, tuberculosis, typhoid and dysentery.

Then on April 15, 1945, was the day of liberation by British soldiers. Prisoners could feel the rumble of tanks in the distance. That day, Warshawski, working the kitchen, was shot in the chest by a guard.

“I will tell you again,” she said, “that we have to believe in a higher power which was over me. … When blood starting coming out of my mouth, I was saying … ‘God almighty, after what I went through already… now I have to die?’”

She lived, to go on and meet and marry another survivor, to go on and have three children and a long life in the Kansas City area.

1:20 - "And then we were given showers and examined for some marks, or for, whatever, lesions, that we got on the trip, because they would immediately put them into the gas chambers if there were any lesions."

1:24:38 - "And then Mengele came around... Mengele turned me around to see if I had any pimples or lesions on my body because they would immediately take me for destruction. And I was not big enough or old enough to give blood. He came in with his bloody apron, and his stance of power, and he was a big man, and he put that intimidating stance, and he would yell and scream his orders, and he would look over people... and he would turn me around to see if there was anything, and I was sent to live, and he did that very often... He [Mengele] would take an inmate to the infirmary and take blood donations. And one person said, 'Is Jewish blood good for the German soldiers?' And he said, 'Yes, very good. We’ll take all of yours.' And she died right there on the table... [He killed her.] She had her blood drained, and she was thrown off, dead...”

1:36:30 - "And while we were at Auschwitz, we always had the big furnace, the chimney, which was a fairly low chimney, which resembled what they have in atomic power stations... and that was always on, and the ashes were flying all over. We had ashes of bodies settle on all of us..."

Archaeologists uncover buried gas chambers at Sobibor death camp

SOBIBOR Poland (Reuters) - Archaeologists working at the site of the Nazi concentration camp at Sobibor, in eastern Poland, say they have uncovered previously-hidden gas chambers in which an estimated quarter of a million Jews were killed.

Polish archaeologist Wojciech Mazurek, who has also been involved in uncovering the site, said the excavations revealed there were eight gas chambers.

“The extermination of people took place there; murder by smoke from an engine that killed everyone within 15 minutes in these gas chambers, in torment, shouting,” he told Reuters Television.

“It is said that ... the Nazis even bred geese in order to drown out these shouts so that prisoners could not have heard these shouts, these torments.”

Both these newspaper headlines are about the sensational testimony of Polish Jewess Zofia (Sophia) Litwinska regarding her partial gassing in an Auschwitz gas chamber.

Then there's the affidavit of Regina Bialek, submitted to the same trial as "evidence," her story is almost identical to Litwinska's, but the gas came out of the floor, and it was Mengele that saved her after a partial gassing (see link)

WEST HAVEN -- At the age most kids enter high school, Polish-born Sidney Glucksman instead witnessed unspeakable atrocities from within the walls of a Nazi death camp.

One of the few Holocaust survivors left to tell firsthand the story of the extermination of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II, Glucksman lives by the mantra: "Never forget."

At Notre Dame High School Wednesday, Glucksman shared horrific tales of watching women and children marched off to gas chambers, never to be seen again, and babies stuffed in bags and brutally murdered.

Glucksman saw babies stuffed into bags and soldiers swinging the bags against concrete walls, killing the babies.

Not sure where to put this - dont think it merits a separate thread and as far as i can tell this story/testimony is not on the board. According to the following a British soldier, part of an elite commando team, rescued a girl from a work unit in the vicinity of Auschwitz. No expert, but I never heard that any units other than Soviets amongst the Allies operated in the Auschwitz region. Of course this British man could have been in the Soviet army, but that surely would have been noteworthy and mentioned in the article.

Not sure if that's ridiculous testimony or an amazing tall story that would rank alongside Obama claiming his uncle was in the unit of US soldiers that liberated Auschwitz! If this bloke is claiming he was part of a Commando unit then that would mean Royal Marines Commandos and as far as I know they were never within a 1000 miles of Auschwitz. He could just, at a pinch be one of those British Tommies who were incarcerated in Auschwitz having been captured in Italy. But I doubt that very much.

From page 23 of Filip Müller's book "Sonderbehandlung" he wrote about being forced to remove bodies from the Auschwitz gas chamber. One time, he found a half-opened suitcase, and gobbled up the cake! Interestingly, he did not get cyanide poisoning.

First, I took off her shoes. My hands were trembling, and I was shaking all over when I started taking off her stockings. [...] Alert, I noticed every remark Starks, to catch something. That moment had come as he crossed into the combustion chamber. My eyes fell on a half-open suitcase, in which I discovered food, which was probably to serve as travel provisions. With one hand I acted as if I was busy taking off a dead man, with the other I rummaged through the suitcase. As I grabbed cheese triangles and a poppy-seed cake out of the suitcase, I kept peering to the door so as not to be surprised by Stark. With my bloodied and soiled hands, I broke the cake and hung it down greedily like a predator.

Holocaust survivor brings history to life for Baldwin students

BALDWIN - Baldwin Middle School students got a firsthand history lesson Tuesday from a Holocaust survivor.

Werner Reich, 91, explained how he was hidden from the Nazis, captured and taken from his family, nearly worked to death in labor camps and escaped the gas chambers at Auschwitz.

"People were crying and screaming and bleeding all over the place, it was a scene like out of hell," recalls Reich, who is from Smithtown.

His grandparents, he wrote, escaped from the occupied Belarus ghetto Novogroduk in the fall of 1943 and hid out in the woods, where they lived off the land for most of the winter.

On the night before Rosh Hashana 1943, the 250 Jews who remained of the town’s 20,000 plotted an escape through a tunnel they had painstakingly dug beneath the fence. The searchlights were disabled and the Jews removed nails from the metal roof so that it would rattle in the wind and hopefully mask the sounds of the escaping prisoners.

My grandmother and her sister didn’t want to leave their father behind. They went to the back of the line to be near him. When the first Jews emerged from the tunnel, the Nazis were waiting for them and began shooting. My grandmother’s brother Chanon, for whom my father is named, was killed along with about 50 others. My grandmother made it to the woods, where she joined the Bielski Brigade of partisan resistance fighters. There she met my grandfather, who had escaped from a labor camp called Voritz. He had lived in a hole in the woods—a literal hole that he had dug—for three years, foraging for food, staying out of sight and sleeping in that hole for the duration of the brutal Russian winter.

Just one empty vegetable tin can as a toilet.” Arriving that same day in Poprad, they were joined by hundreds of other girls from around the region, all of whom were kept in a holding pen near the station.

They were given a red bowl and spoon, an itchy sack-like uniform, and wooden shoes the prisoners nicknamed “clappers”. “They made such a racket we had to take them off and walk bare foot whenever we went through the gate, so as not to annoy the SS,” she says. They slept four or five to a wooden bed, one blanket between them, were woken at 4am and brushed their teeth using a finger dipped into the tea they received for breakfast.

When her group was ordered to stand outside for a roll call on the first day she recalls seeing the snow stained with blood. “Bizarrely quite a large number of us had got our periods at the same time,” she says. “We had no underwear, no sanitary protection. But then that never happened again because of what they put in the water to prevent us from menstruating.”

One day in winter Heinrich Himmler of the Nazi leadership came to inspect the camp. “An SS guard suggested it was too cold for us to be outside working. I heard Himmler reply: “Für Juden gibt’s kein Wetter [there’s no such thing as weather for Jews].”

A video of an elderly Hasidic Holocaust survivor returning to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland and emotionally recounting his harrowing experiences there has gone viral on Facebook, drawing hundreds of thousands of views in just a few days.

In the video, Rabbi Nissen Mangel is seen telling a group of Boyaner Hasidim in Yiddish about how he, at the age of 10, underwent the “selectzia” process — supervised by infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele — with his family, who were from Bratislava. Mangel lied to Mengele about his age — claiming he was 17. Even though Mengele realized this was not true, Mangel and his father were chosen for slave labor, rather than immediate execution.

“It was a miracle,” Mangel said. “1.5 million children were sent to the gas chambers and to me Mengele said to work with my father.”

How the seven dwarfs of Auschwitz fell under the spell of Dr Death: The hideous experiments carried out by Nazi Josef Mengele on seven trusting brothers and sisters

As powerful beams of light revealed the new arrivals at Auschwitz, the SS guards could scarcely believe their eyes. One by one, seven tiny people were lifted off the train.

Five were women — each no taller than a girl of five, yet wearing make-up and elegant dresses. They looked like painted dolls.

Huddled together in a circle, the seven dwarfs made no attempt to join the teeming mass of passengers being herded up a ramp by soldiers with alsatians straining at the leash.

Like most of the Hungarian Jews on the train, which had taken three days to arrive at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the dwarfs had no idea they’d just been deposited in the Nazis’ most notorious extermination camp.

An SS officer strode over and established they were all siblings from the Ovitz family. Immediately, the order went out: Wake the doctor!

It was nearly midnight on Friday, May 19, 1944, and Dr Josef Mengele was asleep in his quarters. All the troopers on duty, however, were well aware of his passion for collecting human ‘freaks’, including hermaphrodites and giants.

A lone dwarf wouldn’t have been sufficient reason to disturb his sleep, but a family — and seven of them — why, it was just like the fairy tale!

They were certainly right about Mengele. When told about the camp’s latest acquisition, the good-looking 34-year-old doctor sprang out of bed.

Meanwhile, the dwarfs watched the rest of the passengers — including their aunts, uncles, cousins and friends — march towards a building with two chimneys that ceaselessly poured out smoke and flames. What was this place — a bakery?

Perla Ovitz, at 23 the youngest dwarf, questioned a Jew in a striped jacket who had helped unload the train. ‘This is no bakery — this is Auschwitz and you’ll soon end up in the ovens, too,’ he told her.

Suddenly, as Perla recounted many decades later, ‘each flame looked like a human being, flying up and dissolving in the air. We went numb, then started thinking about the unknown man we were waiting for — if this was a graveyard, then what was a doctor doing here?’

Had he been asked, Mengele would have said he was conducting important genetic research that might one day lead to a professorship.

To that end, he felt no compunction about torturing, maiming and often killing his unlimited supply of human specimens. His enthusiasm, ambition and cruelty set him apart even from the other death-camp doctors.

One of his first jobs had been to deal with a typhus epidemic in the female camp — a problem he solved by sending an entire barrack of 498 women to the gas chambers.

It was also his idea to kill families of gypsies for the sake of their eyeballs, which were extracted for research.

To the Ovitz family, though, a doctor represented hope. So as soon as Mengele arrived, they crowded around him, answering his questions eagerly in chorus.

His excitement mounted as they recounted their family history: their father Rabbi Shimshon Eizik, a dwarf, had been married twice to tall women, who gave birth to seven dwarfs and three conventionally sized siblings.

‘I now have work for 20 years,’ he exclaimed joyfully.

Mengele whispered orders to the officer in charge. Remarkably, not only were the seven dwarfs, their two normal-sized sisters, sister-in-law and two of their children saved from the gas chamber that night, but so were the families of their handyman and neighbour — who insisted they were close relatives. In total: 22 people.

Theirs was to become one of the most extraordinary survival stories of World War II. But it would be many years before it was told, after extensive research and interviews with Perla Ovitz and other camp survivors.

Unusually, the heads of the Lilliput Troupe were not shaven and they were allowed to keep their own clothes. Simon Slomowitz, the handyman, lifted them on to their wooden bunks and performed all the tasks they couldn’t manage.

Instead of having to use the latrines, they were given the potties of dead babies. There was also an aluminium bowl in which they had to wash every day, as Mengele was obsessed with hygiene.

On the day they were summoned to Mengele’s lab, the women carefully made up their faces and put on their best dresses. To the emaciated inmates who saw them led to a truck, they must have seemed like a bizarre hallucination.

The lab looked like any ordinary clinic, with staff in white coats. All they seemed to want at first was to take blood samples, which seemed a small price to pay for their lives.

But the blood-letting was repeated week after week, along with dozens of X-rays. ‘The amount of blood they took was enormous and, being feeble from hunger, we often fainted,’ recalled Perla. ‘That didn’t stop Mengele: he had us lie down and when we came to our senses they resumed siphoning our blood.

‘They punctured us carelessly and blood spurted. We often felt nauseous and vomited a lot. When we returned to the barrack, we’d slump on the wooden bunks — but before we had time to recover, we’d be summoned for a new cycle.’

Mengele didn’t know what he was looking for. Far from recording any effort to break the genetic code for dwarfism, the paperwork reveals only routine tests for kidney problems, liver function and typhus.

Psychiatrists bombarded the dwarfs with questions to test their intelligence, doctors repeatedly tested them for syphilis — and boiling water, quickly followed by freezing water, was poured into their ears.

According to Perla, this water torture was excruciatingly painful and nearly drove them crazy. Also alarming was the fact doctors pulled out healthy teeth and plucked hairs from their eyelashes.

Dora Ovitz, the full-size wife of the eldest dwarf Avram, was cross-examined by Mengele about her sex life. As he bombarded her with increasingly lewd questions, he was actually salivating.

He was unfailingly polite to his seven captives, often praising them for their appearance. ‘How beautiful you look today!’ he’d say to Frieda, the prettiest of the dwarfs.

Flirtatiously, she’d reply: ‘I knew that Herr Hauptsturmführer was coming, so I took great care to make myself up in his honour.’

If Frieda ever skimped on her beauty routine, he’d ask: ‘Are you in a bad mood today? Why didn’t you apply your beautiful red lipstick?’

Mengele also brought sweets and toys — belonging to children he’d killed — for tall sister Leah’s 18-month-old son Shimshon. Malnourished and traumatised, the boy had never cried or uttered a word.

One day, however, he toddled towards Mengele, saying: ‘Daddy, Daddy.’ The doctor smiled: ‘No, I’m not your father, just Uncle Mengele.’

YVONNE Engelmann was just 15 when she was rounded up with her family and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, one of the network of German Nazi extermination camps operated by the Third Reich in occupied Poland in World War II from 1940-1945.

But it was an unlikely miracle that saw her survive to tell the disturbing tale.

After arriving at the camp, Yvonne was immediately sent to the gas chamber. Thanks to some strange twist of fate, it malfunctioned and she was left naked in the chamber overnight before being freed.

By some miracle, the Nazi’s kept her alive, and she was sent to sort through the clothes of newly arrived Jews to find any gold or valuables they’d hidden.

An Israeli artist who survived Auschwitz as a child has told how Dr Josef Mengele used to whistle Mozart as he chose who would be sent to die in the gas chambers.

“He must have loved Mozart, because if he was bored during the selection he always whistled Mozart,” Yehuda Bacon said.

The 87-year-old Mr Bacon was one of the so-called “Birkenau Boys” selected by Dr Mengele to work as forced labourers at Auschwitz.

He has spoken out about his experiences at the extermination camp in a new book published in Germany.

According to Julius Eisenstein, his family was killed at Treblinka in 1940... However, Treblinka 1 was not opened until September 1941, which was the labor camp. Treblinka 2 was not opened until 1942, which was the alleged extermination camp. How is this possible?

Another lucky Jew, who was saved from the gas chambers because they ran out of gas... and an old man took a bullet for him:

When Les Held was 6 years old, he and his family were sent to a concentration camp. But each time the Nazis tried to kill him, he cheated death.

He was sent to the gas chambers, but on that day, they ran out of gas.

When he was put in a line to be shot, an older man pushed Les down and took the bullet instead.

Occasionally he would hand the rifle to his wife so that she could have a shot. To entertain his nine-year-old daughter he sometimes used very young children for 'clay pigeon' practice, having thrown them up in the air so that he could take pot shots at them. His daughter would applaud and say, 'Papa, do it again', Papa did.

Murder was so monotonous that the staff were officially encouraged to devise new methods, and one of them named Wepke, made a bet that he could cut a boy in half with one stroke of his axe. The bet was taken. Wepke got hold of a ten-year-old boy in the camp, made him kneel down with his head hidden in the palms of his hands, and after taking a practice swing, with one single stroke he cut the boy in two.

And an SS Captain decided that he would strangle women and children as well as freeze men to death in barrels, because he was bored and 'murder was monotonous' so he came up with entertaining ways to kill:

Gebauer, with his own hands, used to strangle women and children. He froze men to death in barrels; their hands and feet were first tied, they were then lowered into the tubs and left there until they froze to death.

And to top it off, did you know that 1.5 million people were gassed at Dachau? Believe it!

We shall begin with another Mengele tale, which are my personal favorite. In this one, Mengele injects Eva Kor with some mystery substance and, for some unknown reason, tells her she will die in two weeks. But she didn't:

One mysterious injection administered by Mengele almost killed the then 10-year-old Eva. She recalls him standing over her barracks bed and announcing triumphantly that she had just two weeks to live.

But she survived Auschwitz – and then Dr Mengele, who later fled to South America where he died in 1979. Last April, Eva travelled to Germany to give evidence in the trial of his former colleague and, despite suffering so much at Nazi hands, publically forgive his sins.

The Holocaust was the biggest money making event for the Germans. If you had gold fillings, you were destined to be killed immediately because there were whole teams who did nothing else in the gas chambers after the Germans gassed them to take the gold out. Bags, and bags, and bags of gold. And the clothing – six million people, there're six million shoes. That's a lot of shoes for a country. The clothing, they sold them all over the world including South America. This was a big, big money making event for the Germans. That extended the war, in my opinion, by probably two years. Nobody talks about it but believe me.

The men they did castrations, a lot – middle size, regular size, big size – they castrated men and they had the worst time, they couldn't live much longer. I knew quite a few who were picked. They picked certain individuals who looked like they were "macho-macho" or whatever. They castrated and injected them. But the women were worse. In Auschwitz it was prevalent, big operation, what they did to women there you can't even talk about what they did to them. Inject them with semen from animals, you name it. Anything you can think of that you wouldn't want to talk about, they did it the people.

A Holocaust survivor, Olga holds a blanket made from the hair of Jewish prisoners who had their heads shaved as they entered Auschwitz. You don't feel afraid before you read the caption – Olga's eyes fairly twinkle from the frame. But, as you glance from the caption back to those eyes, they seem to be daring you, now, to look away.

The 'Automatic Shooting Machine' of Mauthausen. This claim is reproduced from the wildly popular history of 'Nazi atrocities' named 'The Scourge of the Swastika' authored by Edward Russell (aka Lord Russell of Liverpool) who was a key figure in the Nuremberg and Tokyo War Crime Trials.

All these categories were handed over to the Gestapo for 'special treatment'. This consisted of being deprived of prisoner-of-war status, sent to the concentration camp at Mauthausen, and shot with a bullet in the neck.

At Mauthausen they were known as 'K' prisoners. When they arrived at the camp they were not registered as were ordinary prisoners, and their names remained unknown except to the members of the 'Politische Abteilung'.

They were at once taken to the detention block, where they were undressed and then taken to what, for camouflage purposes was called the bathroom but which was, in fact, a room in the prison cells near the crematorium designed for execution by shooting or gassing.

One of the methods of shooting these 'K' prisoners has been described by a French officer who was himself confined in the apparatus. 'The shooting was done by means of a measuring standard with an automatic contraption which shot a bullet into the back of his neck as soon as the wooden bar which determined his height touched the top of his head.'

Sometimes they were marched down in batches to the quarry dressed only in shirts and pants and mowed down by machine-gun fire. Death certificates were prepared in every case and endorsed, 'Killed while attempting to escape.'

Music journalist Barry Cain writes in his 2007 book "77 Sulphate Strip" about visiting the former Nazi concentration camp Dachau with the rock band The Jam in April 1977, and relates a extremely garbled story about Ilse Koch aka 'the Red Witch of Buchenwald' one of the band's entourage told him:

In the camp museum, manager John Weller [Paul Weller's father] looks at a picture of Nazis burning books before the war. The caption runs: 'where books are burnt humans will be burnt in the end.' Henrich Heine.

He remembers a newspaper report at the end of the war detailing the surreal sex life of a woman SS commandant. Every time a new batch of prisoners arrived she would choose the most virile-looking and lay him that night. The following morning she'd whip him to death, cut off his penis and pickle it in a jar. When her home was raided by American soldiers they found a room full of jars. She was known as the 'preying mantis'

On November 11, 1933, the Polish newspaper the Illustrated Daily Courier published a horrendous piece of atrocity-propaganda in which it claimed the Polish police had uncovered a Nazi-affiliated group operating in Poland, France, and Czechoslovakia, which sought to entice army officers and soldiers into becoming spies for the Nazi movement with money, gambling, orgies, and specially trained attractive female agents who would seduce the men.

Should the men refuse the offer of becoming a Nazi agent, or if they were ineffective agents, the paper insisted, they were murdered and their bodies were dissolved in acid. So far 505 men had been murdered by the group known as the German Patriotic League.

Following is a British newspaper article which reported on the story in the Polish paper, and then a translation of the full article from the Polish newspaper:

obtained a list of the foreigners murdered

193 Poles, and
46 Germans.

It is further alleged that many Czecho-
slovakians have also been done to death.

WOMEN EMPLOYED.

Many of the victims are said to have been
army officers and soldiers.

According to the story in the Cracow
paper, beautiful women were employed by
the German organisation to persuade their
victims to desert from the army and go to
Germany.

They were then put in touch with the Ger-
man espionage organisation, and if they
refused to act as spies for Germany they
were murdered.

So that all traces of the crime should
be cleared away, the bodies were burned
or dissolved in special chemical compounds.

Most of the murders, it is stated,
were committed in Breslau, Silesia.

The organisation is said to be still active,
not only in Poland but in other countries.—

Dora Basch Schoen, 1919-

At Auschwitz, DS's parents were taken away forever. DS witnessed the hanging of a young girl as the victim's eyes were being pulled out. When the war was ending in Poland in November 1944, DS was moved to Germany, to Bergen-Belsen, Bendorf, Braunschwig, and Buchenwald.

In her testimony, DS remembers the day she left Auschwitz when she heard the voice of a girl calling out to her sister, "You are going on a transport: I'm going to the crematorium."

Jack Spiegel, 1918-

JS was incarcerated in an incredible number of concentration camps. He believes that he survived by constantly volunteering for new jobs in different camps...
JS was moved to Minsk for a short period and then to Bobruisk, where he remained from October 1942 until March 1944. He remembers "a horrible welcome." The officer said, "If you work, all will be fine. If not..." He took a pistol and killed a person. After two months in Bobruisk, only one hundred of the three hundred men who had been in his bunk remained alive. The others were regularly murdered, especially on Sundays. After a while, JS was given a kitchen job. He found that the food for the dogs was better than the food for the prisoners. In that camp, only ninety-one people were left alive from the original three thousand...
JS recalls how the Germans would hang "young kids" in Bobruisk to let the prisoners see what could happen to all of them. An SS guard shot at JS one day, and barely missed him, for the "crime" of stretching his arms while working in the field.

Some disgusting testimony of alleged medical experiments from the book "Anatomy of the Auschwitz Death Camp" -- do not read if you have just eaten!

[Auschwitz Doctor Horst] Schumann's experimental subjects - relatively healthy men and women in their late teens or early twenties - were lined up in a waiting room and brought in one by one. Women were placed between plates which covered their abdomen and back, while men were positioned with penis and scrotum on a plate. The "treatment" lasted several minutes. Many of the women received substantial burns, which became infected or led to peritonitis. Following x-rays, the victims often underwent castration surgery. Women had their ovaries removed, which carried a further risk of infection, so that laboratory examinations could determine whether the x-rays had effectively destroyed tissue. These rough operations were usually performed by prisoner doctor Wladislaw Dering, who ultimately perfected this technique to attain a proficiency of 10 within two hours. The victimized women were given a spinal anesthetic but were awake during the surgery. The men, after their exposure to x-rays, had their sperm collected through the brutal massage of their prostates with pieces of wood inserted into the rectum. These x-ray castrations were performed mainly on Jews but also on one group of Polish men, who were probably given an even higher dosage, which caused their genitals to rot away. When they did not respond to ointments, they were immediately gassed. While statistics are uncertain, the best estimate is that some 1,000 prisoners, male and female, underwent these x-ray procedures and that some 200 were subjected to further surgical removal of sex organs.

From these over-crowded, disease-ridden blocks the women were roused each morning as early as 3am for roll call on the parade ground and made to stand for hours in their thin striped dresses even in the iciest winter.

A fat SS man on a bicycle circled round them, lashing out with a whip. He was the slave labour chief and this was his cattle market where he selected prisoners for work details.

Then they were herded off and set to work — heaving rocks and road-building, sewing military uniforms and making electrical equipment for the Siemens company, which had a factory there.

Ravensbruck’s first inhabitants were mainly German and had been arrested for petty crimes or voicing opposition to the Nazis.

As well as prostitutes, they included doctors, opera singers and politicians. Later the camp took in women captured in countries occupied by the Nazis, many of them members of the Resistance and enemy agents, including a handful from Britain.

On entering the gates, these new arrivals would stare in horror and disbelief at the corpse carts, the emaciated forms squatting around the kitchen block and the crematorium furnaces billowing smoke.

The inspiration behind this facsimile of hell was Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, who supervised the network of concentration camps. He was a frequent visitor.

His mistress — he called her ‘Bunny’ — lived in a love-nest nearby and he took to dropping in when on his way from Berlin.

It was he who sanctioned the use of the Pruegelstrafe, in which a prisoner was strapped over a wooden horse and given 25 lashes on the buttocks with an ox-whip. It had long been used on men.

Now women were similarly thrashed within an inch of their lives. But worse perhaps even than these were the spine-chilling medical experiments carried out on the inmates. These began with the camp’s doctor, Walter Sonntag.

Encouraged by Himmler he began by testing ways of killing off prisoners. Injecting petrol or phenol into their veins was his favoured method.

Sonntag was a sadistic brute. Each morning, dressed in his immaculate, black SS uniform, he passed along the line of women waiting outside the camp hospital who were suffering from dog bites, gashes from beatings or frostbite and kicked them with his jackboots or lashed out with his bamboo stick, smiling as he did so.

He particularly enjoyed extracting healthy teeth without anaesthetic.

One of Himmler’s obsessions was his belief that regular sex made for better soldiers, and he instructed Sonntag to find a way for them to have intercourse in brothels without contracting venereal disease.

The doctor experimented on prostitutes in Ravensbruck in search of a cure for syphilis and gonorrhoea.

No records remain of how he carried out his trials, though everyone was aware they were happening. A camp survivor heard of ‘syphilis being injected into the spinal cord’.

But firm evidence does exist of a series of macabre medical trials that began in the summer of 1942, when 75 of the youngest and fittest women — all Poles — were summoned to the parade ground, where SS surgeon Karl Gebhardt lifted their skirts and inspected their legs.

Six of them were selected and sent to the hospital block.

There they were bathed and put in beds with crisp, clean sheets. Then a nurse shaved their legs before wheeling them into the operating theatre. ‘Be brave,’ she told them.

As she sank under the anaesthetic, one of them repeated over and over: ‘We are not guinea pigs ... we are not guinea pigs.’ But that’s precisely what they were, though the camp name for them would be Kaninchen — ‘rabbits’.

When that first ‘rabbit’ woke, her legs were in plaster. Within hours she and the others were screaming in agony as their legs began to swell.

They were being used in vivisection experiments to discover the best drugs for treating the war wounds of Germany’s soldiers. The women’s legs had been cut open and dosed with bacteria, with added dirt, glass and splinters to ensure that infection spread further.

Days later, the plaster was removed and their wounds agonisingly scraped out before being treated with different experimental drugs. ‘Rabbits’ who fought against what was being done to them, or screamed too loudly because of the pain or were no longer of any use, were put out of their misery with lethal injections or simply taken out into the forest and shot.

The medical experiments were supposed to be top secret. But the whole camp was aware of them, and was horrified. ‘We were terrified the same might happen to us,’ recalled Maria Bielicka, ‘and everyone went out of their way to help the “rabbits”.’

Inmates brought them titbits of food. The Poles in the camp set up an aid committee and assigned a Polish ‘mother’ to each ‘rabbit’ to try and look after her welfare.

But the tests worsened as ever more fanciful medical theories were explored and right to the very end, the ‘rabbits’ lived in fear of extermination, knowing that, alive, they were proof of the atrocity.

To aid the wholesale slaughter, Himmler now decreed that Ravensbruck should have its own gas chamber, which was built in January 1945. The camp had become overcrowded to breaking point and he needed to make space for even more prisoners, especially with the camps in the East forced to close.

Shooting and poisoning took too long. Gassing was quicker. It would double the numbers killed. A temporary gas chamber was fashioned out of an old tool shed close to the crematorium, just outside the camp wall.

Measuring 12ft by 18ft, it resembled a car garage. Gaps and holes in the walls were covered with mastic and a special airtight cover fixed over the roof with a small hatch.

The women were pushed inside, 150 at a time, and the door shut. Then a canister of gas was thrown in from the roof. According to a witness, there was moaning and crying for two to three minutes, then silence.

Prisoners in the closest blocks would hear the lorries pull up and wondered why the engines were left running for so long. Then someone said it was to cover the screams from the gas chamber.

The air was thick with smoke from the crematorium. Its three furnaces could barely keep pace.

The gassing at Ravensbruck went on almost right to the end, even during air raids and when Russian guns could be heard in the distance. Over one weekend alone, 2,500 women were gassed.

The aim was to destroy evidence of what had happened there before the Allies arrived.

More nonsense about babies being drowned in buckets

Stanislawa Leszczyńska was instructed to murder babies, but refused. She is a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic church.

Most pregnant women at Auschwitz were simply sent to the gas chambers. Women who found out they were pregnant at the camp were sometimes given abortions by Gisella Perl, a doctor who helped prevent hundreds of women from giving birth. Often, when women were discovered to be pregnant they were summarily executed.

Others were sent to a hospital barracks to wait out the rest of their pregnancy in squalid conditions. “Sister Klara,” a midwife who had been sent to the camp for murdering a child, oversaw the barracks with a woman named “Sister Pfani.” They were in charge of declaring babies born in the ward stillborn, then drowning them in buckets, often in front of the mothers who had just given birth. Sister Klara’s role did not include assisting with deliveries.
