Looking that the rigus Jack Taylor is attending to it looks like it's a frame up. It shows a blower fan attached to the box on one side then an outlet pipe on the other. then there is Jack shown fondling two cans in the box which we should assume to be Zyklon B containers. Thus it would be the pellets were put into the box cavity the lid closed the fan turned on and air passing through the box to the outlet pipe.

The only way the rigus could work to any degree of efficiency would be to fill the box with the pellets to ensure the forced air would pass through them. If the box was only partly filled the air would take the path of least resistance which would be via the volume of the box that was empty.

We can see in the photo that the two cans held by Jack couldn't fill even a quarter of the box. To fill the box would require maybe ten to twelve cans.

Now if we could see in the photo maybe some partitions that could be slid in and filled with the pellets then the air would be forced to move through the pellets in the partitions without having to fill the whole box with pellets.

Then we could wonder how the spent pellets, which would have at least some of the agent remaining would be taken out of the box. Going by the photo they would have to be scooped out which seems like it would have been a problem the Germans would have figured out. Thus we would have the removable partitions as the option or at the least a whole insert that could be extracted.

As it stands, what we see in the photo is something totally amateurish. Some makeshift thing put together in order to frame the Germans.
