Indeed and even, if you assume that the pretext was legit.

I'd assume most British had no clue on how the Polish-German war was engineered to create that pretext. Neither did the people in the Colonies, or rather dominions. Because that would require a decent study of previous history, diplomatic record, sequence of events AND on what covert operations would have been up and running. The later would be dismissed as "conspiracy theory", but given the presence of British Intelligence Operatives in Poland prior to 1st September 1939 it's worth investigating.

By creating a distraction the Allies tacitly admitted that there was a legit casus belli for the Germans. That Naujocks statement they got is more then just dubious. And the British viewed Naujocks with suspicion themselves. It sounds much like projecting. Ironically Hitler never used the Gleiwitz incident never for the purpose of justification. The German media printed another narrative about events elsewhere.

With regards to stabbing Poland in the back Churchill knew full well what he was doing. He made the following statement to the Prime Minister of the Polish government in exile Stanislaw Mikolajczyk on August 2 1944 - "The Russians will sweep through your country and your people will be liquidated. You are on the verge of annihilation." You can't get any more blunt than that.

The Poles decided to enter into an alliance with Britain instead and were stabbed in the back by Churchill when he agreed to hand over Poland to Stalin at the Yalta conference in 1945.

The British never went to war about Poland, that was a pretentious lie they used. If it really was war for Alliance with Poland, they'd declared war on the USSR as well, once they invaded Poland. They didn't and this was in line with the guarantee given to Poland. Which was solely directed against Germany.

We now know that Churchill agreed to Stalin taking over Poland in 1944 even before the Yalta Conference of February 1945.

That had the advantage that the Poles won't complain about being stabbed in the back by the British for getting a war going.
