Theft of intellectual property and patents by the allies; Third Reich technological advancement

Postby Lamprecht » 4 years 1 month ago (Wed Apr 17, 2019 1:31 am)

It is often claimed the 3rd Reich was a totalitarian and oppressive regime that stifled all technologically innovation in order to oppress Jews and other ethnic minorities. In fact, I recently came across someone who stated that in just over a decade of power, the Nazis basically invented nothing of value and had no significant technological advances. It was of course largely blamed on the lack of "Jewish genius" due to Hitler's alleged "paranoia"

So I did some reasearch and found these links, and figured we should have a thread detailing technological achievements during the Third Reich, and the theft of this intellectual property by the Allies.

It is a fact that countless technological developments by the Germans were stolen after WWII by the victorious Allies. Some articles I have cited claim that there were hundreds of thousands of patents stolen at the end of WWII. The V2's rocket technology was used by the USA to go to the moon. Without Werner von Braun, the Americans possibly wouldn't have been able to achieve what they did in the space race. And let's not forget about Volkswagen, Porsche and the Autobahn, or the many architectural achievements of the Third Reich.

The Z3 is widely acknowledged as being the first fully functional automatic digital computer, and Konrad Zuse is acclaimed by computer scientists as being the most admired and respected computer pioneer. Infra-red/night vision technologies and also CCTV (video surveillance) were invented under the Third Reich. The hull of the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus, was based on the Walter hull developed by the Germans for the elektroboots. It seems that they invented 3D films as well.

These are just some of many examples, there is a lot more information in the article links below:

They all seem to work for me. Maybe the archive.is domain was down? I've had that happen before.

Replace archive.is with archive.fo
or archive.li
They should definitely work

There's a book that was released as recently as June called "Taking Nazi Technology" which as far as I know is the only book to cover this topic. You can download the book here https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=D03492B8CED3C9526A9FC226D0096218

41HyAg+Mz4L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Here's the books description.

During the Second World War, German science and technology posed a terrifying threat to the Allied nations. Combined with Germany's generations-old reputation for excellence in science and engineering, these advanced weapons, which included rockets, V-2 missiles, tanks, submarines, and jet airplanes, gave troubling credence to Nazi propaganda about forthcoming "wonder-weapons" that would turn the war decisively in the Axis' favor. After the war ended, the Allied powers raced to seize "intellectual reparations" from almost every field of industrial technology and academic science in occupied Germany. It was likely the largest-scale technology transfer in history.

In Taking Nazi Technology, Douglas M. O'Reagan describes how the Western Allies gathered teams of experts to scour defeated Germany, seeking industrial secrets and the technical personnel who could explain them. Swarms of investigators recruited from industry, military branches, and intelligence agencies invaded Germany's factories and research institutions. They seized or copied all kinds of documents, from patent applications to factory production data to science journals. They questioned, hired, and sometimes even kidnapped hundreds of scientists, engineers, and other technical personnel. They studied technologies from aeronautics to audiotapes, toy making to machine tools, chemicals to carpentry equipment. They took over academic libraries, jealousy competed over chemists, and schemed to deny the fruits of German invention to any other land-including that of their allies.

Drawing on declassified records, O'Reagan looks at which techniques worked for these very different nations, as well as which failed-and why. Most importantly, he shows why securing this technology, how the Allies did and when they did, still matters today. He also argues that these programs did far more than spread German industrial science: they forced businessmen and policymakers around the world to rethink how science and technology fit into diplomacy, business, and society itself. A deeply researched comparative history of the American, British, French, and Soviet efforts to control and exploit German science and technology amid fierce internal and external competition, Taking Nazi Technology is the first history to capture the whole picture of this crucial period at the dawn of the Cold War.

Here's some extracts from the books conclusion.

As I have attempted to show in this book, there was far more to Allied intellectual reparations efforts than a few “Nazi scientists” being hired for rocket research. The idea that it was worth investing time, effort, and political and diplomatic capital to acquire German science and technology appealed to each of the major Allied powers (and many other nations not discussed in this book but which took part as well), despite their enormous differences. It appealed to military leaders, politicians, and civilian bureaucrats covering a wide range of governmental departments in each nation. It appealed to businessmen and representatives of trade groups across industries as diverse as chemicals, wood pulping, fishing, toy making, audio recording, synthetic rubber, metallurgy, automobiles, prefabricated housing, aeronautics, textiles, kiln manufacturing, scientific equipment, and machine tools. Even ignoring other programs, FIAT alone published almost fourteen hundred reports on specific industries and technologies by the end of 1947, and that does not take into
account the many investigative groups that reportedly never submitted final reports in their fields. Thousands of German scientists, engineers, and skilled workers found new employment (whether voluntarily or not) in service of the conquering powers. The entire world of German patent filing, contents of scientific libraries, and records of firms’ industrial research were available for international competition to search. The scale and ambition of these programs are worth emphasizing, even if the amount of science and technology they truly transferred to the Allied nations seems to be much less than planners had hoped (or opponents feared). Despite (or perhaps in some small part because) of these investigations, West
German industry thrived in the 1950s, in the famous “economic miracle” (Wirtschaftswunder). This book is not a history of German economic history, nor even one focused on the entirety of postwar reparations politics, but there seems to be little evidence that at least the Western Allies’ programs significantly hurt West Germany.

Anyone who wants to argue that the intellectual reparations were an enormous gain for the United States, for example, can find plenty of evidence to support that claim. In some industries, there very clearly were substantial, important gains. This is especially the case in military technologies such as jet engines, submarines, and especially rocketry. Magnetic tape for audio recording crossed from Germany to America through FIAT investigations. Many companies expressed wholehearted enthusiasm for the information they gained while investigating Germany, and their claims must be taken just as seriously as the detractors. Among the many glowing reports in the archives of TIIC, FIAT, BIOS, and other investigative agencies are reports like one that states, “one report alone saved him $140,000,” or Goodyear reporting that another “would save them at least $20,000 in research.” A journalist for the Daily Express estimated the value for the United Kingdom at £100,000,000 as early as October 1945, though he admitted that estimations varied so wildly that he could as easily guess £1,000,000,000 without anyone being able to disprove it.

National Assessments

Despite what American and British intelligence agencies perceived, France likely came out ahead. To these erstwhile allies, French policy was underhanded, duplicitous, and manipulative, trying to undermine German science so that they could have their agents “steal” the best Germans from other occupation zones. Some of that likely happened, and France certainly did bring hundreds of V-2-related technicians into temporary camps and laboratories to help the French military acquire a basis in that technology. In general, though, the team that was sponsored by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (and coordinated with other departments) focused instead on what they saw as the practical, feasible approach: long-term integration between French and German research establishments.

I would certainly like to see more books on the topic of National Socialist achievements which go into more detail leaving out the same old attachments to the canards we're familiar with. But I think the Third Reich can no longer be abused as a state that was certainly militarily capable of taking on multiple great powers, but paradoxically achieved and invented nothing of great worth in those short 12 years. The people of our age and even older since the wars end must be some of the worst sufferers of cognitive dissonance in the world.

Good find HMSendeavour, the book is only 2 months old. Here's a mirror:

Google Books: https://books.google.com/books?id=2YaMDwAAQBAJ

Seems as though this theft of technology was looked at a form of "reparations" and, in the eyes of the "Allies" paid the cost of their occupation.

Lucius Clay, the governor of the US zone of occupation, argued to the Quadripartite Coordinating Committee in December 1945 that “scientific knowledge, patents, technical processes, and general ‘know-how’ constitute a large part of Germany’s economic potential and are properly included in the category of reparations... This category [of know-how] ... is important to each of the Allied Powers, but its intrinsic value is indeterminate since it depends upon the extent of parallel knowledge existing within the confines of the respective home government.”

One set of British planners initially saw report writing as a useful scheme because, as they heard from industry: “In this way the German manufacturing process and the ‘know-how’ surrounding it become an invisible German export, payment being made to the Treasury which credits the sum to Germany’s account offsetting the costs of occupation.”

More on this topic. The Americans took not only patents, but also various German intellectuals/scientist. They also took currency, precious metals, art, and other valuables.
Americans were not far behind their communist counterparts and what was not want only destroyed, was pilfered as “souvenirs.”

“We ‘liberated’ German property,” winked one GI. “The Russians simply stole it.”

Unlike its primitive Soviet ally, the United States had no need for German plants and factories. Nevertheless, and as Ralph Franklin Keeling points out, the Americans were far and away the “most zealous”at destroying the Reich’s ability to recover. Continues the historian:

Although America went about the business of dismantling and dynamiting German plants with more fervor than was at first exhibited in any other zone, our motive was quite different from the motives of our allies. Russia is anxious to get as much loot as possible from Germany and yet to make it produce abundantly for Russia to help make her new five year plan successful, and ultimately to absorb the Reich into the Soviet Union. France is ravenous for loot, has been anxious to destroy Germany forever and to annex as much of her territory as possible. Britain has found uses for large amounts of German booty, wants to get rid of Germany as a trade competitor, while retaining her market for British goods. The United States has no use for German plant and equipment as booty....[but wants] to eliminate German competition in world trade. We are willing to permit the German people to subsist on their own little plot of land, if they can, but we are determined that they never again shall engage in foreign commerce on an important scale.16

While the US may have spurned German plants and factories, not so the Reich’s hoard of treasure. Billions of dollars in gold, silver and currency, as well as priceless paintings, sculptures and other art works were plucked from their hiding places in caves, tunnels and salt mines and shipped across the Atlantic. Additionally, and of far greater damage to Germany’s future, was the “mental dismantling” of the Reich.Tons of secret documents revealing Germany’s tremendous organizational talent in business and industry were simply stolen, not only by the Americans, but by the French, English and British Commonwealth. Hundreds of the greatest scientists in the world were likewise “compelled” to immigrate by the victors. As one US Government agency quietly admitted, “Operation Paper-Clip” was the first time in history wherein conquerors had attempted to bleed dry the inventive power of an entire nation.17

“The real gain in reparations of this war,”Life magazine added, was not in factories, gold or artworks, but “in the German brains and in the German research results.”18

Mike Walsh discusses the sacking of Germany, with a good collection of photos from pre-war Reich.
The Sacking of Defeated Germany

August 21, 2016
Mike Walsh

The sacking of Germany after her unconditional surrender will go down in history as one of the most monstrous acts of modern times. Its excess beggars description and its magnitude defy condemnation.” ~ Ralph F. Keeling, Gruesome Harvest; 1947.

Ralph Franklin Keeling of the Institute of American Economics didn’t mince his words:
When we arrived the Germans were strongly anti-Communist; they have since started fleeing our zone and entering the Russian where they are welcomed into the Communist Party and even into the Red Army, in whose ranks they may someday be able to get their revenge on us.

Mainstream media air-brushes the scale of Allied looting of defeated Germany. The same media daily recycles the ‘plundered Nazi gold’ fable neglecting to point out the Germans were denying the plundering victors of German art treasures.

Upon its conquest Germany’s wealth was first to be liberated. Every house and every apartment was entered, searched, and stripped of everything valuable and moveable, jewelry, silverware, and works of art, clothing, household appliances, and money. Stores, shops and warehouses were ransacked. Farms were deprived of their farm animals, machinery, seed stocks, fodder, wine, food stocks. Telephones were removed, telegraph equipment dismantled. Cars, trucks, even fire engines were seized. The Americans, Russian and British troops found themselves knee deep in the remnants of a standard of living that most could only dream about.

William H. G. Stoneman Foreign Correspondent, Chicago Daily News May, 1945:
Millions of dollars’ worth of rare things varying from intricate Zeiss lenses to butter and cheese and costly automobiles are being destroyed because the Army has not organized a system of recovery of valuable enemy material.”

The term ‘recovery’ is a euphemism for looting. He went on to describe, scattered everywhere, millions of dollars’ worth of plundered goods. The troops simply could not carry everything that they could steal so they vandalized it and left it to rot. It is estimated that the value of looted properties by the allied armies ran into hundreds of millions of dollars and “deprived the German civilian population the comforts and necessities so sorely needed.”

In a displaying of breathtaking chutzpah the Soviets complained that,
American officials have stolen equipment from plants in a zone earmarked for shipment to Russia and sold it to foreign countries at a profit.

Chicago Sunday Tribune, which back then was a great deal more honest than media today, was damning:
No effective steps were taken to discourage looting by the invading armies during the war. It was tolerated under such euphemism as ‘souvenir collecting.

Over 200 German art masterpieces were looted by the American armed forces and are still held under lock and key in the United States. The British were equally piratical:
The British seem to be everywhere when there is any scientific or industrial information to be gleaned.

Hand-in-hand with the plundering of Germany was the removal its means to trade: The production of shipbuilding, manufacture and operation of aircraft, ball and taper roller bearings, all heavy machine tools, heavy materials, aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, vanadium, radioactive materials, hydrogen peroxide, synthetic oils, gasoline, ammonia, ceased.

Ralph F. Keeling:
German science has been destroyed, and with it German ability to compete commercially with the war victors.

He goes on to say:
We even managed to kidnap a large number from the western Russian zone when we retired to let the Russians take over. As a consequence we now have at our disposal hundreds of German scientists who no doubt constitute one of our most profitable acquisitions taken from the fallen Reich.

Assistant Secretary of State, William L. Clayton, on June 1945 was equally candid:
We intend to secure the full disclosure of all existing German technology and invention for the benefit of the United Nations (sic).

America’s pre-war isolationist policies came to an end. By 1945 Winston Churchill, the unelected premier of a bankrupt Britain, had placed much of the British Empire’s assets with Wall Street’s pawnbrokers. Bloated on war plunder a now expansionist United States was to build on its ill-gotten gains for the next 75 years.

Nick Cook, Aerospace Consultant for Jane’s Defence Weekly wrote in the Daily Mail August 19, 2001:
A lot of the (American) expertise on anti-gravity dated from decades earlier, and National Socialist Germany in particular. Much of what formed the basis of the Skunk Works’ (Lockheed) projects came from the German technology and expertise plundered by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. Germany was a treasure trove of desirable technology, covering everything from weaponry to electronics to textiles and medicine.

Briton Ian Fleming, who was later to write the James Bond novels, set up what was virtually a private army tasked with ‘tech-plunder’. However, the British were ill prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that faced them. The more resourceful (rapacious) Americans simply removed the paperwork for hundreds of thousands of patents and shipped them home. According to the US Office of Technical Services, the body set up to ensure that German technology was rapidly moved into American industry, the documents contained a wealth of material which “very likely contained practically all the scientific, industrial and military secrets of National Socialist Germany.”

Under the term ‘reparations’ millions of German peoples were transported to the Soviet gulags to be used as slave labor. For the large part these unfortunates, women and children included, were sealed in American made rolling stock and transported across a railway infrastructure built on slave labor using Western made materials.

Ralph Keeling says;
At Potsdam Russia was apportioned the lion’s share of reparations. She was to receive her own zone (East Germany/East Berlin) plus 25% from other zones.

The value of Germany’s bombed and battered plant was put at between 5 and 10 billion dollars; half of it was in the Russian zone and was now the Soviet Union’s ‘by right of conquest’. It was agreed that 40% of it could be removed to the USSR. Three hundred and ten plants were dismantled and accordingly removed.

Off they went:
Six shiploads carrying the physical assets of the Deschmag Shipyard, Germany’s largest shipbuilding company. Twenty car loads of machinery and tools valued at $5,000,000, representing half of Germany’s largest ball-bearing plant, the Gendorf Amorgana Chemical works valued at $10,000,000, and the vast Daimler-Benz underground aircraft engine plant.

According to Reparations Commissioner, Edwin W. Pauley:
the United States had earmarked 144 plants for removal to Russia. Many of Germany’s greatest producers of civilian goods were dismantled and shipped eastwards. Among them were the two largest factories, the largest sugar refineries, the largest grain processing mills in Europe, the great Bemberg silk mills famous for their hosiery and lingerie, and the Zeiss Optical works at Jena. All secondary rail lines were torn up and all electric locomotives removed. Two hundred key plants were placed under direct Russian control, with the German work force of 1,300,000 on subsistence wages, the profits going to the USSR.”
Russia is as keen to get as much loot as possible to help make her Five Year Plan successful, and ultimately to absorb the Reich into the Soviet Union.”

“France is ravenous for loot, has been anxious to destroy Germany forever, wants to get rid of Germany as a trade competitor, while retaining her as a market for British goods,” wrote Ralph Franklin Keeling. He added that “German nationals of Latin American nations were to be picked up and sent to Europe as slaves.”
The pillage of the defeated Reich reached across German borders: Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, and other countries were forced to hand over to the United States, all German assets, investments and properties.
In what amounted to an obituary of a once trading rival Keeling solemnly writes, “Taking their foreign trade away from them, and making it impossible for them to export manufactured goods was tantamount, therefore, to pronouncing the death sentence on the German people.”

Mark Twain:
It is yet another Civilized Power, with its banner of the Prince of Peace in one hand and its loot-basket and its butcher-knife in the other. Is there no salvation for us but to adopt Civilization and lift ourselves down to its level?

I found a reference on the website of Carlos Whitlock Porter, to a book which sheds more light on these details. http://www.jrbooksonline.com/cwporter/letter34.htm

From the book 'SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND REPARATIONS: EXPLOITATION AND PLUNDER IN POSTWAR GERMANY' by John Gimbel, Stanford University Press, 1990.

Porter says:

The author describes the manner in which German scientific and technical research, including private commercial trade secrets protected by international patent law and worth billions, was simply stolen and sold or given to private American companies for risible sums of money. A single paragraph in a single German document was said to have been worth 100,000 dollars to one American company. The scope of the plunder is such that one is almost left with the impression that the Americans actually provoked the war just to indulge in international thievery on a gigantic scale. This probably explains where most of the “Nazi Think-Tank” material actually disappeared to. – C.P.]

The following are a few paragraphs from the book, pp. 22-23:

“Howland H. Sargeant, the chairman of the wartime THC, the agency that collected both written and oral reports from investigators upon their return from Europe after the war, testified before a committee of Congress early in February 1946 that our top people in Germany had discovered and brought back technical know-how on a cold steel extrusion process used by the Germans to produce shell fuses at the rate of about twenty or thirty per minute, while Americans produced similar fuses at a rate of about one every three minutes. Such ‘processes carry over directly’ to peacetime production, Sergeant observed. Noting that the United States had some 600 sheet-stamping shops and more than 2,500 manufacturing shops that stamped materials out of sheet metal, he concluded that all of these could use this process to produce more economically and efficiently, and to manufacture ‘far more intricate parts than ever before’.

“Variations of the rubber story and the cold-steel extrusion theme could be repeated for synthetic fuel, jet aircraft, rockets, infrared, aerial photography, optical glass, electron microscopes, power circuit-breakers, die-casting equipment, wind tunnels, acetylene chemistry, textiles and textile machinery, X-ray tubes, forest products, ceramics, colors and dyes, tape recorders, heavy presses, diesel motors, high-tension cables, radio condensers, insecticides, color film processing, a unique chocolate-wrapping machine, a continuous butter-making machine, a precision grinding machine, a “hot welding” process for making radiator cores, and other technologies. Wind tunnels found in Germany were reported to be ‘far superior’ to anything in use in the United States, and a working model on a twin-engine diesel motor was judged to be ‘far superior to anything that had been produced or planned in the States’. ‘An ingenious German machine’ for producing radio condensers was thought to be advanced enough to ‘revolutionize the manufacture of condensers for radio, radar, and other electric and electronic equipment’. Textile industry technicians, one of whom reportedly said ‘we have been asleep here’, found German ‘textiles and yarns with no commercial counterpart in this country’ and ‘equipment for spinning worsted yarns ‘superior to ours’. Finally, Army Signal Corps experts and ‘many manufacturers and designers of electrical equipment in this country’ judged German die-casting machines – which the Germans had used to produce bomb parts, fuses, radio and field telephone sets, field glasses, camera parts, and ‘complete radio chassis of excellent design’ to be ‘a real advance in the die casting art’".
