We wonder if these kitchen chimneys were not responsible for much of the smoke, flames and smell so characteristic of survivor accounts.

It might be helpful for those not familiar with the layout of the Birkenau camp if we reproduced the following diagram:



Although listed here as a men's camp sector, BIIc was apparently being used in the summer of 1944 to house Hungarian Jewish 'depot-prisoners', mainly women, it seems.

Perhaps this could help explain why, as suggested by Mr. Mattogno, male inmates such as those from Radom were housed in the spare capacity available in BIIe, the Gypsy camp.

The tall chimneys shown on the Birkenau pictures behind the kitchen building are identical to the kitchen chimneys in the main camp, as shown on the picture which you referred to. Please pay attention to the very top of the chimneys with sort of a frame around them.
The kitchen building of the main camp is a substantial brick building.

The one in Birkenau is rather ramshackle, it would fit more into the slum surroundings of the Favelas in Rio. They would at best have a stove pipe sticking through the roof as a chimney.

That thought also occurred to us, but, on the other hand, these kitchens must have had substantial oven facilities if they were cooking food for thousands of prisoners.

We are satisfied that the picture was taken from BIIc. As Mr. Germania suggested, there is no obvious motive for someone to forge this photo.
