TEL AVIV: A Nazi during the day, a Jew by night. That was the bizarre predicament of Solomon Perel in the years Europe was reeling under Nazi terror. The terror claimed Perel’s parents and sister. He may have died too, but his instincts and luck ensured that he lived to tell his remarkable tale of surviving the Holocaust.

Perel, now 94, recounted his journey at an interaction with visiting Indian journalists in Tel Aviv. Originally from Germany, his family fortunes dipped the day Hitler came to power. In 1935, when the Nazis passed the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws, the Perels decided to relocate to Lodz in Poland.

Four years later, Germany invaded Poland. Perel’s parents decided to send him and his brother to a Polish area under Soviet occupation. “My father Azriel was a rabbi. He asked me never to stop being a Jew. But my mother, Rywka (Rebecca), said, ‘Shlomo, do whatever it takes to stay alive.’ I remembered her words all my life,” Perel said.

Perel was taken in by an orphanage for Jews run by the Komsomol (a Soviet youth organisation) while his brother Yitzhak went further ahead to Vilnius in the Lithuanian SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic). “I got a communist education at the orphanage where I learnt Marxism and Leninism. Stalin was my god,” Perel said with a smile.

Then, Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. Perel fled, but was captured in Minsk in the Byelorussian SSR.

“In the Soviet Union, the Nazis just took people into the woods and shot them. I was also in such a group. I hid my identification papers in a hole I made with my shoe heel. When a German soldier came and asked me if I were a Jew, I remembered what my mother had advised, so I lied and said that my name was Josef and I was a Deutschen Volk (a German). And he believed me,” said Perel, whose life was the subject of a 1990 film called Europa Europa. Perel was brought to the German camp, and was lucky that nobody asked him to remove his pants. “They would have found out that I was circumcised.”

Perel soon became a favourite among the German soldiers. He accompanied the Wehrmacht all the way to Moscow. It was during that stint that Perel met Stalin’s eldest son. Yakov Dzhugashvili, a young lieutenant in the Red Army, had been captured. Perel was made his interpreter. “I tried to help him as much as I could. But the Germans treated him very badly,” Perel recalled.

Later, after the German disaster at Stalingrad, Hitler offered to trade Yakov for Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus, but Stalin refused, saying he was no fool to exchange a field marshal for a lieutenant. Yakov was later executed.

Though Perel was careful to hide his identity, a German doctor found out. “He took a fancy to me and would often touch me inappropriately. One day, as I got ready to shower, he tried to rape me and discovered that I was circumcised. But he never told anyone as the Nazis also hated homosexuals. He died in Leningrad, taking my secret to his grave.”

The commandant of the camp adopted the teenaged Perel and sent him to a boarding school at Brunswick, Germany, run by the Hitler Jugend (Youth). “Those were the most agonising four years of my life. I lived every moment with the fear of being discovered. I did weird things to survive, and even tried to regrow my foreskin by pulling at my penis. I lived like a Nazi during the day. It was only at nights that I explored my Jewish identity.”

Perel never saw his parents and sister again. But in those tumultuous years, he found some solace in love. His girlfriend Leni was a Nazi.

In 1945, Perel was drafted into the Volkssturm militia and sent to fight the Americans. Rescue came in the form of capture. His brother Yitzhak was also rescued from the Dachau concentration camp. The two remained together until Yitzhak’s death 30 years later.

“After the war, I came to Israel. My girlfriend wanted to marry me. But I said we couldn’t because a Jew couldn’t have married a Nazi without causing a scandal.” Their bond didn’t end though. “Leni lives in Canada and they meet every year,” said Nurit Tinari of the Israeli foreign ministry, Perel’s interpreter.

But the Holocaust changed his life. “I lost faith in god. Was god there in Auschwitz?
No, god and Auschwitz cannot co-exist.”

The Israeli government plans to bring Perel to India in April.

Dr. Leon Bass, the veteran of U.S. Army 183rd Engineer Combat Battalion and veteran Holocaust promoter, apparently now features 'gas chambers' in his Buchenwald-liberation repertoire.
Bass spoke at a Holocaust do at Beth Hillel-Beth El synagogue in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on November 11, 2012. Reporting on the event, The Jewish Veteran states that Bass told his audience of seeing gas chambers at Buchenwald.
This isn't the first time that Bass has been reported as claiming he saw gas chambers at Buchenwald; an article in The Rome News-Tribune stated that Bass had claimed to have seen gas chambers whilst addressing the Prejudice Reduction Project at Forum Civic Center in Rome, Georgia, on October 2, 2000.

Neither in Dachau, nor in Bergen-Belsen, nor in Buchenwald, were Jews or other inmates gassed. The gas chamber in Dachau was never completed and put "into operation."

On 1 October 1948, Commander Anton Muller and his second-in-command, Emil Lachout, sent the following memo from Vienna to all interested parties:

In those cases, it has been possible to prove that confessions had been extracted by torture, and that testimonies were false. This must be taken into account when conducting investigations and interrogations with respect to war crimes. The result of this investigation should be brought to the cognizance of former concentration camp inmates who at the time of the hearings testified about the murder of people, especially Jews, with poison gas in those concentration camps. Should they insist on their statements, charges are to be brought against them for making false statements.

Mar. 26--WEST HAVEN -- At the age most kids enter high school, Polish-born Sidney Glucksman instead witnessed unspeakable atrocities from within the walls of a Nazi death camp.

One of the few Holocaust survivors left to tell firsthand the story of the extermination of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany during World War II, Glucksman lives by the mantra: "Never forget."

At Notre Dame High School Wednesday, Glucksman shared horrific tales of watching women and children marched off to gas chambers, never to be seen again, and babies stuffed in bags and brutally murdered.

At 12 years old, Glucksman was a student at a school in Chrzanow, Poland, when Nazi soldiers invaded his school and rounded up the Jewish children. The year was 1940. The students were loaded onto trucks and taken away.

"They told us we would be back with our parents in the evening. That evening never came," he said.

The children slept outside and ate soup that consisted of slivers of potato floating in warm water.

He and the others were taken to Gross Rosen concentration camp where he was forced into labor and later transferred to Dachau concentration camp.

A young Glucksman watched as trains rolled in with box cars full of women and children packed tight as sardines.

"If you had to go to the bathroom, you did it standing up. If people died, they died standing up," he said.

He described for the students what he considers the worst scene he has witnessed in his lifetime. Nazi soldiers shaved the heads of women and children and told them they were going to take a shower. They were led to a gray building with two large doors. Brushes and soap sat on a shelf.

"We were waiting 15 minutes and they never came out. That's when we knew that was the first batch of the dead gassed people," he recalled.

The crematorium went day and night without interruption. Smoke came out of it all the time and the camp stunk of burning human bones and flesh.

Glucksman saw babies stuffed into bags and soldiers swinging the bags against concrete walls, killing the babies.

Despite the horrific images etched into Glucksman's memory, he managed to make a happy life with wife, Libby, who he met after being liberated from Dachau in 1945.

Eva Olsson, an 84-year-old Holocaust survivor, shared her amazing tale of survival to over 600 people gathered in the Lasalle Secondary School gymnasium on Monday.

Olsson began her speech by elaborately detailing the moment that her and her family were shipped to the Auschwitz concentration camp from her hometown of Szatmar, Hungary.

“When we got off the train, the masked Angel of Death, Josef Mengele, was waiting for us,” said Olsson. “He would signal us to go two ways, which was right or left. My mother went left.”

Those sent to the left were deemed as “unfit to work” and were led to the gas chambers, which included older men and women, children, and men with frail bodies.
“I just wanted to wrap my arms around her and say goodbye,” said Olsson. “But it was too late.”

Olsson used this example to illustrate the importance of people showing love for those around them.

After several years in Auschwitz concentration camp, her and her younger sister would be shipped to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, which was the Nazis' most brutal camp.

“When we arrived, there were five children at a time being forced into the crematoriums to be burned alive,” says Olsson. “Many were led into rooms with shower heads, but water did not come out. It was gas.”

Holocaust survivor to share memories in Kristallnacht talk

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Murray Goldfinger, a Holocaust survivor, will speak about his experiences Monday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Forum of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell University.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the University's annual observance of Kristallnacht, the planned attack on Jews that began the Holocaust in 1938. It is sponsored by Campus Jewish Life and Hillel.

Goldfinger, who is the grandfather of a Bucknell student, was born near Krakow, Poland. Forced by the Germans to leave his village, his family hid from the Nazis until 1942, when Goldfinger, then 15 years old, was taken to Roznov, the first of several camps where he worked as a messenger, gardener, carpenter and miner.

Lucky survivor

Goldfinger credits his survival to luck and good-hearted people, including a non-Jewish former schoolmate of his mother who allowed them to live in a small home near their village, a work camp foreman who took a liking to him, and a police chief whose daughter was in love with Goldfinger's brother.

Even Josef Mengele, known as the Angel of Death for his cruel medical experiments on Jewish prisoners, checked on Goldfinger's condition after he was condemned to death for allegedly breaking his shovel. The bullet bounced off his skull and lodged in his shoulder, a wound that later became infected.

Goldfinger's last camp was Buchenwald where, on April 10, 1945, he was taken to the woods to be killed. Luckily, an American plane spotted the impending execution and began shooting at the Nazis. The Nazis hid from American fire among the prisoners before sending them back to camp where they were liberated the next day.

His family was less fortunate. His parents were shot and killed in the woods near their village, and his oldest brother was executed after being falsely accused of ripping up Polish currency. His four sisters died in the gas chambers at Belzec and one sister was last seen in 1941 in the Tarnov ghetto.

Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz has some crazy claims. She claims that jews were eating sawdust salami, grass, and frogs at Ausschwitz. She claimed they were also eating and pooping from the same bowl. She says nazis cared more about killing jews than winning the war, so that trains taking jews to camps were given "priority" over those carrying troops to battle. She also said the entire German nation wore clothes from dead jews, and had stuffed mattresses and cloth made of jewish hair. She also claimed that some jews volunteered to be gassed!

Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz can never forget that number. Living through two years in a Nazi death camp during World War II carved it on her mind like Adolf Hitler’s Nazis tattooed it in blue on her left forearm.

Cernyak-Spatz survived Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most notorious of Germany’s five death camps, where Hitler’s soldiers carried out what they called “The Final Solution” and what the world knows as the Holocaust.

She stressed to Corriher-Lipe students on Thursday that the Holocaust was not a single event, but an efficiently conceived and executed process that began “the minute Adolf Hitler came to power” as Germany’s dictator in 1933.

Then the soldiers started killing them. At first, German SS soldiers forced Jews to dig a pit, then lined them up and knocked them into the pit with bullets from their machine guns — line after line of Jews.

It also cost a lot of ammunition, which the German army decided it couldn’t afford with a war going on. So the Nazis looked for a more efficient means of mass murder.

They settled first on trucks, into which they packed Jews and ran carbon monoxide exhaust. But they could only kill about 150 people at a time that way, so they built the death camps.

So fierce was Hitler’s hatred, trains carrying Jews to the death camps were given priority even over troop trains carrying soldiers to battle, Cernyak-Spatz said. When she stepped off the train and onto the platform at Birkenau, the results assaulted her senses.

The Nazis had told Jews to dress in their warmest clothes for the journey to the “work” camps, Cernyak-Spatz said. After the gas chambers, they gathered those clothes for their own use.

For the years during the war, “that is how the whole German nation was clothed ... in the clothing and property of dead Jews,” she said.

The mass killings in the gas chambers took only about eight minutes, Cernyak-Spatz said. For those not selected to die right away, death could come more slowly, usually after a couple of months of hard labor and near starvation.

At Birkenau, the Nazis took their prisoners’ clothes and gave them the uniforms of dead Russian soldiers to wear. The uniforms had bullet holes in them and were spattered with blood.

The Nazis shaved their prisoners and stuffed the hair into mattresses, used it for insulation and wove it into cloth.

Newly arrived prisoners got a bowl — only a bowl, no utensils. They used it to eat and drink. And when they had to, when a guard wouldn’t let them use a bucket outside at night, to eliminate their own bodily waste.

When they had to do that, they dumped the waste out beside their bunks, which were stacked three high. Cernyak-Spatz said one of the first lessons at Birkenau was “to find a top bunk.”

Prisoners got a meager bread ration, “sawdust salami” and little else. “Interesting things looked edible ... some grasses, some weeds, live frogs,” Cernyak-Spatz recalled.

Soviet jewish propagantist and Pravda correspondent Boris Polevoi alleged in his work "The Factory of Death at Auschwitz" that electric conveyor belts were used to electrocute people at Auschwitz and then convey them to the ovens:

The traces of the electric conveyor belt, on which hundreds of people were simultaneously electrocuted, their bodies falling onto the slow moving conveyor belt which carried them to the top of the blast furnace where they fell in, were completely burned, their bones converted to meal in the rolling mills, and then sent to the surrounding fields.

Wilhelm Brasse claimed to have taken 50,000 photos at Auschwitz for the Nazis. In one instance, he claims that Mengele liked one jew's tattoo so he had Brasse take pictures. After being photographed, he was gassed and skinned. The tattooed skin from the gassed jew was then stretched on a table to be framed for Mengele, rather than framing the photograph.

Wilhelm Brasse was forced to take photographs of frightened children and victims of gruesome medical experiments moments from their death at the extermination camp where some 1.5 million people, mostly Jewish died in the Holocaust.

In February 1941, he was summoned to the camp commander’s office, the notoriously brutal Rudolf Höss, who would later be hanged for his crimes.

Mr Brasse was certain that this was the end but when he arrived he discovered that the SS was looking for photographers.

There followed what must have been a bizarre and terrifying experience. The assembled men were tested on their photographic skills.

Each must have known failure would mean a return to hard labour and death.

He said: ‘We were five people. They went through everything with us - the laboratory skills and the technical ability with a camera. I had the skills as well as being able to speak German, so I was chosen.’

The Nazis wanted documentation of their prisoners. The Reich was obsessed with bureaucratic records and setup ‘Erkennungsdienst,’ the photographic identification unit.

Based in the camp, it included cameramen, darkroom technicians and designers...

One day, a prisoner was sent to him because one of the camp doctors, the infamous Nazi Dr Josef Mengele, wanted a photograph of the man’s unusual tattoo.

He said: ‘It was quite beautiful. It was a tattoo of Adam and Eve standing before the Tree in the Garden of Eden, and it had obviously been done by a skilled artist.’

About an hour after taking the photograph, he learned that the man had been killed. He was called by another prisoner to come to one of the camp crematoria where he saw the dead man had been skinned.

Mr Brasse said: ‘The skin with the tattoo was stretched on a table waiting to be framed for this doctor. It was a horrible, horrible sight.’

‘Mengele liked my photographs and said he wanted me to photograph some of those he was experimenting on.

‘The first group were Jewish girls. They were ordered to strip naked. They were aged 15 to 17 years and were looked after by these two Polish nurses.

'They were very shy and frightened because there were men watching them. I tried my best to calm them.’

Mr Brasse and another inmate managed to bury thousands of negatives in the camp's grounds which were later recovered.

On February 2, 1945 Pravda, organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, published an article briefly describing what Red Army troops had found on overrunning the Nazi slave labour camp at Auschwitz. The article, the first public revelation of the site’s existence, is surprising for what it does not mention.

THE ARGUMENT between revisionists and non-revisionists is that the record of Nazi atrocities, though no doubt based in fact, contains significant amounts of fiction. Whether fact or fiction, any atrocity claim should be placed in its proper historical context so that the researcher can understand either how the facts came to be known or how the fiction evolved in the popular mind.

The first press reporting on the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp is therefore bound to be of interest to historians, regardless of how they regard the Auschwitz claims. The following article, by Boris Polevoi, was originally published on Friday, February 2, 1945, in the Soviet national paper Pravda, less than a week after the camp had been liberated (January 27, 1945), and a full three months before the official Soviet report on Auschwitz (May 6, 1945), known by the Exhibit-Number assigned to it at the International Military Tribunal (IMT) as USSR-08.

What is most striking about this press report is that it is totally at variance with the version of Auschwitz that we have come to know, substituting the traditional atrocity record with another, completely imaginary one. That the first non-anonymous observer at the Auschwitz camp could be so far from the current narrative speaks not only to the inaccuracy of this initial report, but also to the artifice of all subsequent ones.

Helmut Szprycer begged Mengele "Don't put me in the gas chamber" and he listened!

At Auschwitz life and death were in the hands of Dr Josef Mengele, the Nazi 'Angel of Death'. On 14th July 1944 Mengele ordered inmates to pass naked in front of him. Those he waved to the right were to continue as slave labourers; those to the left were sent for almost immediate death in the gas chambers. All the boys were waved to the left.

Helmuth remembered his grandmother's injunction to 'stay alive at all costs'. From somewhere he found the courage quickly to march up to Mengele before the guards could shoot him, click his heels (he'd seen films of Hitler Youth) and look into his eyes, saying in German: "I want to work for you. I will do anything - clean your shoes, your motorcycle. Don't put me in the gas chamber." Mengele asked where he came from and on hearing Berlin ordered Helmutt to work.

Helmutt clicked his heels and rejoined the other boys, when Harry asked him to save his life too. Incredibly, he returned to Mengele and pleaded on behalf of Harry. Mengele was running out of patience; he held out two matches, the shorter one leading to death. Helmuth drew the longer, Harry the shorter. Harry begged Helmuth to make a further plea for his life. This he did, calling on inexplicable reserves of bravery for his own life was continually at risk. Astoundingly, Mengele relented.

Both boys were made messengers in different parts of the camp, wearing blue blazers with riding breeches while on duty. In a surreal twist of fate, Harry was later transferred to Auschwitz I where he raised and lowered the barrier at the entrance gate which bore the notorious slogan Arbeit macht frei.

When Hella Drizen arrived at Auschwitz, she was forced to remove her clothes and stand before Mengele, who decided whether she should work or be cremated.
Though she was spared at that point, she faced another horror with the physician some months later. She was in a tub taking a rare bath in a couple of inches of water, when suddenly the tub filled with water and Mengele showed up. She knew that when extra water was given, it was in variably a precursor to being taken to the gas chamber.
Yet she smiled at Mengele, and said, "Thank God, you've come here. I'm glad because it is the first time I've gotten enough water for a decent bath." He smiled in return, admiring her guts, and said, "You're very lucky."

How I witnessed Auschwitz's medical experimentation
