Beginning in the early 1930s, the United States federal government was infiltrated at the highest levels by Soviet Communist agents and other "fellow travelers."
M. Stanton Evans and Herbert Romerstein in the following book document in great length USSR infiltration into the USA federal government, as well as the mass media, universities, unions, etc. This included a large number of communist sympathizers as well as outright Soviet agents. A few examples: Harry Dexter White (Treasury Department), Alger Hiss (State Department), Harry Hopkins (White House), and Lauchlin Currie (White House).

The claim is that an international communist conspiracy took over the US government under US President FDR. Soviet agents operated at the highest levels of the US federal government, formulating policy, engaging in espionage, and otherwise advancing their diabolical Communist agenda at the behest of Moscow and to the detriment of the American people. Evans and Romerstein summarize this period of history in the final chapter of their book (pages 254-255):

First and foremost, there can no longer be any serious question, at least among serious people, that Communist and pro-Soviet penetration of the American government was extensive, involving many hundreds of suspects, and that by the era of World War II and early stages of the Cold War reached up to significant levels. The now available documentation to this effect is massive.

Second, the infiltrators in numerous instances were able to wield important leverage on US policy overseas in the war years and the early Cold War. This was achieved by pro-Soviet operatives who variously controlled the flow of official information, propagandized their superiors in favor of pro-Red causes, or in some cases actually made or guided key decisions. By such leverage the likes of Lauchlin Currie, Harry White, and Solomon Adler (or in Great Britain, the Communist James Klugman) were able to steer the policies of the West in favor of pro-Communist interests.

Third, pro-Red penetration and the resulting policy damage occurred because Soviet agents preyed on the credulity of officials who were ignorant of Communist methods and apparently had no interest in learning. A striking pattern in the record is the extent to which sophisticated Soviet agents attached themselves to naive US officials who were highly susceptible to disinformation. The classic cases were White with Henry Morgenthau at the Treasury and Alger Hiss with Stettinius at State, but there were many similar match-ups elsewhere during the course of the Cold War struggle.

The net effect of these converging factors was a series of free-world retreats, as pro-Communist forces triumphed in a host of European countries during the earliest stages of the Cold War, followed by the fall of China to Communism a few years later. These events would be a prelude to Marxist conquests elsewhere, in places as disparate as Indochina; the Latin American states of Cuba and Nicaragua; African nations, including Zimbabwe and Angola; and numerous other cases of like nature.

It's significant that these pro-Red victories were in the usual instance achieved not by conventional armies marching past national borders, but by the actions of subversive elements inside the target nations, prompted and aided by outside Communist powers and with frequent assistance from forces in the United States or other Western nations.

I was actually working on another thread (focused on post-WWII USA) and this book/subject in the OP came up, so I decided to make a separate thread for it.

The following thread refers to a book by Jaff Schatz, "The Generation: The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Communists of Poland" that describes the overwhelming role of Polish Jews in the pre-war communist movements in that country, and the lengths the Jewish communist went to appear less Jewish and more Polish. An excerpt:

In the prewar period even the most "de-ethnicized" Jews only outwardly assimilated by dressing like gentiles, taking gentile-sounding names (suggesting deception), and learning their languages. They attempted to recruit gentiles into the movement but did not assimilate or attempt to assimilate into Polish culture; they retained traditional Jewish "disdainful and supercilious attitudes" toward what, as Marxists, they viewed as a "retarded" Polish peasant culture.

This combination of self-deceptive rationalization as well as considerable evidence of a Jewish identity can be seen in the comments of Jacub Berman, one of the most prominent leaders of the postwar era. (All three communist leaders who dominated Poland between 1948 and 1956, Berman, Boleslaw Bierut, and Hilary Minc, were Jews.)

While Jewish members saw the KPP as beneficial to Jewish interests, the party was perceived by gentile Poles even before the war as "pro-Soviet, antipatriotic, and ethnically 'not truly Polish' " (Schatz 1991, 82). This perception of lack of patriotism was the main source of popular hostility to the KPP (Schatz 1991, 91). On the one hand, for much of its existence the KPP had been at war not only with the Polish State, but with its entire body politic, including the legal opposition parties of the Left.

On the other hand, in the eyes of the great majority of Poles, the KPP was a foreign, subversive agency of Moscow, bent on the destruction of Poland's hard-won independence and the incorporation of Poland into the Soviet Union. Labeled a "Soviet agency" or the "Jew-Commune," it was viewed as a dangerous and fundamentally unPolish conspiracy dedicated to undemmining national sovereignty and restoring, in a new guise, Russian domination. (Coutouvidis & Reynolds 1986,115)

The KPP backed the Soviet Union in the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1920 and in the Soviet invasion of 1939. It also accepted the 1939 border with the USSR and was relatively unconcerned with the Soviet massacre of Polish prisoners of war during World War II, whereas the Polish government in exile in London held nationalist views of these matters. The Soviet army and its Polish allies "led by cold-blooded political calculation, military necessities, or both" allowed the uprising of the Home Army, faithful to the noncommunist.

Moreover, as was the case with the CPUSA, actual Jewish leadership and involvement in Polish Communism was much greater than surface appearances; ethnic Poles were recruited and promoted to high positions in order to lessen the perception that the KPP was a Jewish movement (Schatz 1991, 97). This attempt to deceptively lower the Jewish profile of the communist movement was also apparent in the ZPP. (The ZPP refers to the Union of Polish Patriots - an Orwellian-named communist front organization created by the Soviet Union to occupy Poland after the war.) Apart from members of the generation whose political loyalties could be counted on and who formed the leadership core of the group, Jews were often discouraged from joining the movement out of fear that the movement would appear too Jewish. However, Jews who could physically pass as Poles were allowed to join and were encouraged to state they were ethnic Poles and to change their names to Polish-sounding names. "Not everyone was approached [to engage in deception], and some were spared such proposals because nothing could be done with them: they just looked too Jewish" (Schatz 1991, 185).

- General George van Horn Moseley on the day of his retirement in 1938, issued an attack on the New Deal policy, claiming the government was manipulated by an "alien element in our midst" and Americans must awaken to the "sinister" motives of the wrong sorts of immigrants, who seek to replace our system with their own un-American theories of government."
