How did the German people react to Hitler's death?

Hello everyone, one thing that I have always wondered, and that is how the German people reacted when in the midst of the tragic defeat and collapse of their nation they were announced that their Führer had died. The fact is that Adolf Hitler was a very popular and loved leader who was supported by the overwhelming majority of Germans and his people remained loyal to him to the end and when his successor, the Großadmiral Karl Dönitz announced his death on the radio he literally said that: "German men and women, soldiers of the German Wehrmacht: our Führer, Adolf Hitler, has fallen. In deepest sorrow and reverence the German people bows", makes me think that the death of the Führer was a devastating moral blow to the German people. Was any tribute paid to Hitler when his death was announced in the areas of Germany that were still free and not occupied by the Bolsheviks and Western Allies? I would not be surprised if this had been the case, for example already in 1945 in a ruined and destroyed Berlin, during the last Führergeburtstag (Hitler's anniversary day) the Berliners paid a great tribute to Adolf Hitler. Civilians and military marched together and adorned the entire city with Nationalsocialist flags and banners bearing slogans such as: "Unsere Mauer Brachen, aber unsere Herzen nicht" (our walls were broken, but our hearts were not), "Führer befehl wir folgen" (Führer orders us, we follow you) or "Der Kriegsstadt Berlin grüßt den Führer" (the war city of Berlin greets the Führer).

Facts like this show that even though the catastrophic defeat was already evident, Hitler was still very popular and the majority of Germans remained loyal to him. What do you think about it?

Perhaps during the brief rule of Karl Dönitz, the German People and the Flensburg government authorities paid tribute to the memory of Adolf Hitler after his death in the areas of Germany that were still resisting to the Bolshevik and Western Allies invasors.
