It is indeed, but only the most extreme and bigoted revisionists seek to whitewash the Germans of all responsibility. What most of us seek to do is to establish a more accurate and more factual picture of what actually happened, and to place it in the wider context of the most terrible conflict in human history where all concerned committed brutal and horrific acts but those of the defeated side are singled out, exaggerated or even invented while those of the victors are glossed over, spuriously justified or simply ignored -- even denied -- and normal investigation into either is taboo and subject to severe punishment.
I find it strange and extremely worrying that the propaganda of a war that ended seventy years ago is alive and virulent today while those of more recent conflicts, like Vietnam and Iraq, even current ones such as Syria and Libya, are seen through for what they are.

To Carto's Cutlass Supreme and Kingfisher and all

Mattogno's death toll of 162,000 comes from The Crematoria Ovens of Auschwitz and Birkenau section 9. Durability of the Firebrick of the Cremation Ovens.

He estimates that 3000 could be cremated before the oven needed to be overhauled and he argues that the ovens were never overhauled. 3000 * 46 cremation retorts of Birkenau (138,000) + 24,000 estimated deaths at the main camp equals !62,000. He says toward the end of section 9:
"From all this it follows that the ovens of Auschwitz I and Birkenau (Auschwitz II) altogether were able to cremate about (138,000 + 24,000 =) 162,000 bodies during the period of their existence. This figure agrees quite well with the number of known, deceased registered inmates."

I've found a lot of sites that cite the numbers that died at the camp (in reality and those claimed to be killed in gas chambers) but I could not find the number of prisoners that lived there in total. Does anyone have those?

The Bletchley Park decrypts information carried in the excellent website www.whatreallyhappened.info will give you some idea as to the total throughput of the auschwitz camp over its operating period. What many of the holocaust supporters don't want generally known is the amount of inmates who went in and out of auschwitz to other camps.

I seem to recall the figure of a million plus in total though that would require verification and of course it is a figure which fits with the 'death' figures somewhat too.

The proponents of the orthodox story like to give the impression that the escape of Vrba and Wetzler which led to the War Refugee report was something extraordinary whereas in fact people were constantly passing through the camp, leaving via transfer, release or escape. I don't recall actual figures as I wasn't involved in the research that went into the site, but anyone interested can look them up. That report rather loses some of its impact once it is realised how many others left the camp and did not report anything of the sort.

borjastick's link whatreallyhappened looks like a good site but I couldn't find where it discussed how many were transferred out of Auschwitz? It seems about 1 million were sent to Auschwitz and the expanded camp could house 200,000 and about 150,000 died so roughly 650,000 should have been transferred, not killed in gas chambers. Does anybody know a good source that discusses the number transferred?

This doesn't directly answeryour question, but it does indicate the numbers being transferred in and out on a daily basis:

Thanks Kingfisher, the table gives me an idea of the arrivals and departures at Auschwitz in January 1943. Does the "morning total", 5384, mean all the camp residents? I don't know how many prisoners were there at the beginning of January 1943. The table says that 4592 arrived and 698 departed so for the month approximately 4000 were added to the camp total - and for the year approximated 48,000 people were added to the camp total. Even if 100,000 people were added in 1943 and 200,000 were added in 1944, the number of arrivals at Auschwitz does not even come close to the 1 million said to have been transported to Auschwitz. I question the 1 million number.
