'True Himmler' by David Irving // Biography Discussion

Postby Otium » 2 years 6 months ago (Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:05 pm)

The first part of the biography of Heinrich Himmler by David Irving has been released. I think it would be appropriate to start a thread on the book. I've already purchased a copy, and I plan on posting whatever revelations come from the book in this thread. I'm sure others will do the same.

I have asked Mr. Irving when we could expect the second part to released. This is what he told me:

Thanks [redacted],

Second part, which contains of course what I might call the “Holocaust stuff”, is written and safe in this computer, and will follow after a suitable delay to establish the validity of the first

David Irving

So it looks as if this first volume will contain the pre-war and early-war revelations. I remember reading on his website that there would be a chapter on the Night of the Long Knives which should prove interesting. Perhaps a more interesting topic to many would be information on Operation Barbarossa - in a email reply from Mr. Irving, in September 2018, he told me that this biography will also contain much elaboration on the pre-emptive war against the Soviet Union:

I am sorry to have omitted to answer the letter below which you wrote me in August. I was just departing for Latvia Lithuania and Poland, so I left it unanswered.

I will answer the questions about Preemptive War more fully in my Himmler biography, on which I am working.

David Irving

We can only speculate about what this "Holocaust stuff" will be, no doubt it will be Irving's definitive attempt to maintain the portion of the Holocaust he wishes to believe in.

I disagree with that. He is as predictable as can be in regard to The Industry. His opinions are not really that much different than that of his nemesis, Debbie Lipstadt. He tows the line where The Industry is concerned, I'm afraid. He had a dabble with 'denial' and was sorted out. He has since been on the back-foot.

Cool title: unusual, and short.

How long has he been working on that? 10 or 15 years?

It seems he started the project before he was sent to prison in Austria for Holocaust Denial and it was up in the air throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Irving says this on the length of preparation time: "Why twenty years? It has not been easy – or inexpensive – to retrieve the thousands of missing private papers, letters and diaries which vanished into unfriendly hands at the end."

Here is the book's full description:
TWENTY years in the making, David Irving's biography of Heinrich Himmler, the man, is finally ready. In two parts, the first of which appears now, Irving describes from true documents the origins of Himmler, an educated man with a Classics teacher as his revered father, and his extraordinary career until the final dramatic hours of his life, raising an army of elite SS soldiers and men to stand for Germany and defend it against the secret Soviet plans to invade all of Europe in 1941. He becomes a most trusted ally of Adolf Hitler, and remains loyal to the end; when he hears of Hitler’s imminent death Himmler takes steps to contact the western Allies and offer them the assistance of the SS against the mighty Russian army. But the western capitals are by then powerless, sucked too far into the Soviet thrall.

Why twenty years? It has not been easy – or inexpensive – to retrieve the thousands of missing private papers, letters and diaries which vanished into unfriendly hands at the end. Mr Irving, already the finder of other secret records surrounding Hitler, identifies the current holders of scores of private letters – partly American, partly Israeli, their identities now oddly concealed by Germany newspaper editors and historians still wilting under the glare of the draconian Morgenthau Plan. (Mr Irving published a facsimile of the secret Plan from Oxford University archives). He uses secret British intercepts of SS messages, as well as Reinhard Heydrich’s papers and KGB files in Moscow archives.

The reputation of his young soldiers was systematically denigrated on the age-old principal Give a dog a bad name and hang him. Mr Irving’s suspicions, spelled out in the first and second part, are that Germany's enemies saw in the SS such a formidable enemy, and in Himmler such a formidable man, that they tracked him tracked down after the war ended, where his life was terminated; the very first chapter examines the circumstances of Himmler’s “suicide” more closely.

The book is illustrated as usual with black and white and colour photographs immaculately printed, including hundreds selected from Himmler’s personal albums now held by the Hoover Library in Stanford, California, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC.

Over 700 pages, with illustrations

Nothing in the description directly mentioning the Holocaust, an interesting choice of omission.

I take Irving's "The reputation of his young soldiers was systematically denigrated" to be Irving again planting his flag in the Revisionist camp.

There's no mention of the Holocaust because he doesn't discuss the Holocaust in this volume. As I showed in the OP, Irving emailed me in reply saying that the second volume of the biography which he already has ready to go, is what contains the information regarding the Holocaust. It wasn't an omission, it's just not the topic of this first book.

I wonder how much Irving has taken from Joseph Bellinger's ground breaking, earlier work.

Himmler's diaries from 1943-45 were also just released last year:

There is a review of the diary here:
https://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/ss-chef-himmler-terminsache-massenmord-1.4868745
Some highlights - The reviewer says:
The service calendar does not reveal what that [Himmler's ideology] meant in everyday life, but the commentary and source-based contextualization of the editors do.
So there is an amount of "reading between the lines" and interpolation of sinister interpretations by the editors. Himmler himself is quoted as saying:
"The most important thing for me is still that it is now possible to drive the Jews East, which is generally [all that is] humanly possible" (9.4.1943).

Certainly the liquidation of women and children is a crime. (...) In any case, my conscience has remained clear, because I have always represented the humane line, even where I have to hate ".
The first quote sounds clearly like emigration and expulsion then. I'm not sure what the second means, but it sounds consistent with the Posen and Sondhofen speeches.

There are further reviews here:
https://www.perlentaucher.de/buch/die-organisation-des-terrors-der-dienstkalender-heinrich-himmlers-1943-1945.html
Can anyone summarise them?

"The most important thing for me is still that it is now possible to drive the Jews East, which is generally [all that is] humanly possible" (9.4.1943).

The German language text provided for this 9 April 1943 quote is:
"Das Wichtigste ist mir nach wie vor, dass jetzt an Juden nach Osten abgefahren wird, was überhaupt nur menschenmöglich ist"

By mid-1943 the alleged extermination of Jews had been long underway. It is no surprise then that the Himmler diaries were not made public much sooner. It does not jive with the orthodox narrative: Himmler was writing about Jews being expelled to the east in his personal diaries when they were allegedly being gassed by the thousands per day.

Executing civilians in reprisal actions was not illegal at the time. In any case, civilian targets in Germany were bombed by the "allies" with the knowledge that women and children would be killed as well. If killing women and children is a crime then all parties involved in WWII are guilty of it.

I'm not sure if this is Himmler's diary. He kept one since he was a child, and I don't know of any publication that has reproduced those diaries in full, and these 1941-1935 service calendar entries (now in two German volumes) don't seem to be it, not the full thing anyway.

What was released last year in German was "Heinrich Himmler's service calendar 1943–1945"
So it's not really a diary but a service calendar. I am not sure exactly where that quotation is from, it only cites a date.
