Average Weight in 1940s

Postby fireofice » 4 months 2 weeks ago (Sat Jan 21, 2023 8:34 pm)

Van Pelt puts the average 1940s weight at about 60kg. However, Hans from HC says:

His assumption that the average weight of adults, including children, was 75 kg and 60 kg respectively is questionable, to put it mildly. Already the average weight of male adult Scots was 63 kg and 64 kg for adult US Americans in 1941. A more realistic figure for Eastern European adults and children in 1941/1942 seems to be 50 kg on average.

I already responded to various aspects of this article before, but this post is about this claim in particular. I'm not trying to "confirm" any view. I'm just trying to get at the truth. Are these the best sources on the matter?

Thank you, slob. Looking at one sample of Scotts or some other sample in another place doesn't really tell us much about the average weight of all of Europe. It seems like an average weight Van Pelt gave of 60 kg including adults and children would be a fair estimate.

Looking at this:

https://books.google.de/books?id=DVpjta ... &q&f=false

It says:

Thus the average nineteen year old weighed... 160 [pounds] in the 1930s.

160 pounds translates to 72.57 kg. This is for the 1930s, which is closest to the time period we are interested in. The HC blogger appears to have made a mistake here. So it looks like we have a lower than average weight in Scotland, and the expected weight in America. It seems like the number of 60 kg for everyone, adults and children, that Van Pelt gave, is the most reasonable.

This sounds way too heavy to me. 72kgs is quite heavy for people who were generally undernourished at that time in history. I weigh about that now and when I was 19 I was about 140 pounds or perhaps even lighter.

The importance of 60kgs average comes into play when considering the alleged kill process at Birkenau 2 and 3.
gas them in the basement? Now the 60kgs has to be brought UPSTAIRS. I feel the Germans would not have designed a kill center like this

The claim is that they were using the lift to transport corpses upstairs.

Now I can believe that this would be done with single corpses occasionally. But 2000 corpses in one batch will become a problem for the narrative. And you need maintenance for the lift as well. Is there any evidence for this?
