As we all know, the "Allies" (including the USSR) were victorious in the Second World War. Since then, there has been a radical shift in "Egalitarian" or "liberal" or "leftist" thinking, whatever you wish to call it, in the USA and much of the West generally. This was not a natural or accidental development, but was planned and orchestrated. After WWII, communists infiltrated the US (government, media, academia, etc) in a plan called "The long march through the institutions." (I may elaborate on this concept in a later post)
In the 1960s the communists recognized that they couldn't convince Americans or the West as a whole of the values of communism. This was largely because of the revelations from Khrushchev about Stalin's murderous cult of personality, Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" and "The Gulag Archipelago" also were released. So there was no way the people could be convinced to adopt communism on ideological or economic grounds. So what did they do?

Mainly, 2 things:
1. They infiltrated and took over our institutions through an ideological subversion and psychological warfare program, demoralizing and brainwashing the American [and western] public. This is discussed in more detail below.
2. They passed the 1965 immigration Act, importing populations that would continue to vote democrat as it increasingly slid to the left. I mean, if you can't convince the people to vote for what you want, then just get new voters! This also includes desegregation, "Civil Rights", and all the other "Social justice" movements of the '60s.
None of this would have happened before World War II as strong public support opposed such policies. And if the Soviets lost WWII, these long-term murderous schemes designed to exploit our weaknesses and turn them against also wouldn't have occurred.

From his book (and speeches) Bezmenov describes the four distinct stages of the "Active Measures" (активные мероприятия / aktivnye meropriyatiya) ideological subversion strategy the KGB were using to subvert the west and in particular the USA. It involved a 4 stage process: Demoralization, Destabilization, Crisis, and finally Normalization.
The longest stage( Demoralization) is so long because it's the time it takes to raise one generation with the ideology of the enemy.
#1 - Demoralization:
Takes about 15–30 years and it's the erasing of old values and implantation of the new ones. In 1985, when his interview was conducted, we were already 25 years into an unbelievably successful process of demoralization in the United States. We've been effectively demoralized in America, since 1960, the Cold War era.
#2 - Destabilization:
Takes a few months to five years. its the destabilization of the current political leadership, strikes, revolts, protests; Destabilization of the key factors — Economy, Foreign Relations, Defense Systems; Marxist and Leninist influence on the economy. He cites examples of this occurring in Nicaragua, Grenada, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
#3 - Crisis:
Takes days and its the collapse or absence of political leadership, its the coupe, a violent change of power. This is where a cataclysmic event upsets and divides the country thereby creating panic among the citizens. Recent examples include the 2011 upheavals in the Middle East, most notably Egypt and Libya. To Americans, symptoms would include circumventing the Constitution and altering the checks and balances of government, and possibly martial law.
#4 - Normalization:
Indefinite span of time — Our current stage in America. The final stage is where the populace finally acquiesces and begins to assimilate communism; it can take up to two decades to complete.
