What's your take in the Willi Herold case ?

Recently i saw a German propaganda movie called "Der Hauptmann". The movie is supposed to be based to true events. Even though this Willi Herold character seems to be an actual soldier of the time, I am unable to find concrete evidence either to the alleged massacres he committed or generally about the biography and actions of that man.

This story sounds really fishy...
He found a German Luftwaffe uniform in the middle of nowhere, then went around claiming he was acting on behalf of Hitler's orders, reaching to the point of executing 90 prisoners in a deserter prison camp (Emsland) and no one having the slightest suspicion of checking his military ID. You can't just run here and there, enter a prison camp in a Luftwaffe uniform and order mass executions on behalf of the Führer himself. How can a Luftwaffe lieutenant have such an authority over a concentration camp. He doesn't even belong to the Heer or the SS. The Wehrmacht was an organized entity, I don't think anyone would be so dumb as not to check a guy claiming his actions are warranted by the Führer. In that way, spies would be able to do anything in Germany and infiltrate the Werhmacht without the slightest difficulty.

By the way, the movie depicts this guy disgustingly, as well as the rest Germans. They have low morals, monstrous behaviour and tries to give the impression that the Wehrmacht was a bunch of drunken, cold blooded murderers who raped, killed and pillaged their own people, then brawled with each other or spent their nights with prostitutes after heavy drinking.
