Opinion on the " Bormann Letters" ?

Postby Volksgenosse » 4 months 2 weeks ago (Fri Jan 20, 2023 6:05 pm)

I've recently found a book edited by Hugh Trevor - Roper and published by Weidenfeld&Nicholson in 1954, called "The Bormann Letters: The Private Correspondence Between Martin Bormann and His Wife from January 1943 to April 1945 ".

Many of the afformentioned letters are used as a source in Volker Koop's book "Martin Bormann: Hitler's executioner". One of the passages that got my attention was this :

Gerda [Bormann] now suggested that after the war racially untainted men should be allowed to have two wives by law. [Martin] Bormann noted next to this passage: ‘THE FÜHRER THINKS IN A SIMILAR WAY!’ So many ‘untainted’ men were falling in this war, and so many valuable women remained childless – but these women in particular needed to have children, Gerda opined, to which Bormann noted: ‘Absolutely – for future battles deciding the fate of the nation.’
The thought of polygamy continued to be on Gerda's mind and even put a new complexion on the prophet Muhammed for her. On 2 February she wrote [to Martin Bormann] that polygamy had been an unconditional necessity for the founder of Islam, for how else would Muhammed have been able to obtain sufficient soldiers to spread his faith with fire and sword.”

(The Bormann Letters, p.47f, letter by Gerda Bormann to Martin Bormann, Obersalzberg, 2 February; 27 January 1944.)

What's your opinion? Hitler supported polygamy now ? :D

This seems like it's just about in the context of losing many men in the war. It doesn't say this was something that was supported on a permanent basis.

Trifling comments Hitler may or may have not made, or may or may not have agreed to which Borman may or may not have misinterpreted are unimportant and not gospel. Clearly the topic wasn't important to Hitler, he never spoke or advocated such things himself. It doesn't matter and shouldn't be given undue emphasis.

Whenever Bormann is a source, there seems to be some deviance from other documentation. I'd handle what comes from or via that guy with some care. There is also the story that he was a Soviet Agent. I think Reinhard Gehlen alleged this in his book.

Yeah I think this is a pretty silly allegation and haven't seen any good evidence of it. If anything, Bormann was one of Hitler's most loyal underlings.

It merely hearsay. Kempka alleges he saw him last in Berlin, when it fell. Did he die, did he escape? Nobody really knows.

Being an underling and acting over the top loyal doesn't really prove anything neither. That's exactly what a spy would also do. And he was suspicious to his colleagues, too. Trying to cease more control to himself as well. I'd count him to the faction in the NSDAP that was more centralist and eager to gather control to the party bureaucracy. Also more hostile to traditional religion than others... For which there are however historical reasons as well. The NSDAP was generally more accommodating than that. But representatives of the churches tried to get more say in affairs that exceeded their mandate as churches. The church representatives were divided on matters themselves. Hence the matter is far more complicated than that.

Nowadays Bormann is quoted for the notion that NS being 'Anti-Christian'. Of course that is a way to pull the churches on board with present agendas wherein NS is somehow an incarnation of evil. Blinding them for the wickedness of the present administration and movements. Reading Barth and Bonhoeffer quickly reveals that those folks where up to something that isn't exactly in line with Christianity neither. And they were theologians, at the heart so to speak.

Bormann as a source? I'd be very careful with that. The table talks are merely apocryphal in nature.

It's an old technique to let another more reputable source say something one would like to tell others.

Another grotesque story rehashed from the propaganda lies concocted by the All Lies during the previous world war.

During WW1, Allied propagandists claimed that polygamy had become mandatory in Germany, that the Kaiser and his people had converted to Islam ("embraced Mahometanism") before the outbreak of the war and that Kaiser Wilhelm II was the Prophet of Allah. It was even said that "Christian Russia and England and France precipitated a holy war against Mahometan Germany and Austria [in 1914]" and that Germany and Austria were "therefore fighting for their very existence and for their holy faith against the attack of Christendom."

"[Austen Chamberlain] has done western civilization a great service by refuting at least one of the slanders against the Germans
because a civilization which leaves war lies unchallenged in an atmosphere of hatred and does not produce courage in its leaders to refute them
is doomed.
